Towards the end of the match, I swear I saw a Spanish defender kick out at Ashley Cole Matthew Etherington style. The referee that night was one of those international sorts that gave a free kick every time a player fell over, so presumably the Spanish defender was sent off and immediately banned from football forever?
Erm...no actually. The referee just ignored it.

DId wew get near enough to anyone in red for them to kick us?
It was like watchuing two totally different sports If the unbelievably overrated Lampard is on £130k a week, I presume Xavi, Iniesta and co are coining a million every seven days? Totally embarassing how our football nation is light years behind the Spanish.
But hey, let's go and watch kids' matches this weekend and hear the familiar cries of parents everywhere:
"Get stuck in" "Do him" "Launch it" "Get rid" "Well in, son"
etc, etc.
....and they wonder why our superstars can't even pass a football.

Did anyone else notice Englands complete lack of ball control compared to the Spaniards, who killed the ball stone dead when receiving a pass. In contrast players like Crouch's first touch sent the ball ten feet away every time, and then lost possession. What an overpaid bunch of unskilled losers they are!

I think MD's post is pointing out (quite correctly) that a Spanish player did kick out at Cole after a tangle on the edge of the Spanish box. Now I know we would all be tempted to kick Cole, but this was in identical circumstances to those in which Ethers was sent off. The Spanish player was not sent off or booked, he was not ticked off and the commentators didn't really mention it. The ref saw what was happening because he waved on play. To those of you who said Ethers deserved to be sent off, I think you are wrong. Players are forever niggling at each other. If in today's cup games, refs send players off every time someone does what Ethers does then at least one game will have to be abandoned through a lack of players.
I fear we are being gently eased out of the Premiership because the words of Arsene Whinger are still echoing around the head of every referee and FA official. Birm fans claim he relegated them last year, because his outburst at them affected referees and the same is happening to us.

Don't entirely agree March. It's not a conspiracy - all of our red cards this season have been deserved. Yes refs are crap, the system is corrupt and big teams get away with murder. Unfortunately they always have and they always will. But we only have ourselves to blame for the discipline problem which has seen us lose key players for important games far too often already.

I spotted it, it maybe wasn't as obvious as Ethers, but warranted a red if his did. Ridiculous.

Probably because it was Ashley Cole.
He deserves a good kicking.

I agree. In which case the sensible response is to get your team to accept the fact that refs (consciously or not) favour the bigger teams with any controversial decisions. So if you're a little team (eg Stoke v Man U) never kick out and if you are touched in any way, go down as if you've been shot. You may consider this disgraceful cheating - I call it a pragmatic response to big team favouritism. When, for instance, did you see someone dismissed or penalised for making the most of an innocuous incident? The most they ever get is a little telling off. John Pantsil of Fulham is a prime example this season against Fuller. In contrast, the slightest act of aggression and you're walking, especially if you're a member of the little team. So, while it may stick in the craw to see our players rolling around, it is simply a sensible response and goes some way to evening things up a little against the likes of Man U, Chelsea et al. Seriously, what's the point of being honest like Wilkinson was against Ronaldo's petulant kick or Faye was against Rooney's swinging elbow. You stay on your feet and wait for the ref to take action and none is forthcoming. Ronaldo hits the deck at the first opportunity and succeeds in getting his opponent sent off. Job done. May as well recognise this and work out a strategy to combat it as with my suggestion above.

Make sure when kicking Ronaldo that he doesn't get up. Sorted!
