At home we go direct on a small pitch and find it easier to put teams under pressure because it's easier to get closer to theirt goal quicker and for our midfielders to support. We try this away but on bigger pitches it's less effective in an attacking sense because it's a much longer way to go for midfielders to support. However the biggest down-side is that it also causes us problems defending...not because we give away possession in our half, but that we give talented teams so much of the ball. Inevitably we end up defending for 3/4 of the game and top players eventually find a way through us.
With skilled players like Fuller, Beattie, Etherington, Lawrence, why don't we try and possess more away from home?
For me though, Whelan is woefully short of the physical attributes needed in center mid at this level. With the players listed above on the field, two holding center mids would do the job...Faye and Diao when fit, but Rory can do a job in there too.
At home, stick to the normal plan. Away, we MUST change as it is NOT working.
