As i was driving down to the match yesterday Kempy said that the midfield two were Salif and Amdy.Which in my opinion was the wrong selection as having these two in the centre offers us no attacking centre midfielders.(Luckily)Salif injured himself in the warm up and Glenn played. He will get better and better if played more often offering us an option at corners free kicks e.t.c.Glenn imo must start from now on as i see him improving al the time

Spot on. I have said the same on the 'Best we played without Ricci Mama' thread it was a godsend that Diao got injured, just how Pulis expected him to compete for 90mins in the middle against Gerrard,Lucas,Mascherano etc etc then he pulls up in the warm up?
Whelan has done well is good at set pieces he offers a threat from free-kicks around the box like yesterday something that Diao never will and Whelan also has the fitness.
Keep him in TP and Glenn keep up the good work.

Amdy and Glenn definitely make up our best central midfield pairing, no questions. I've always been a fan of Whelan and he's just getting better and better. God help us if he gets injured though cause two holding midfielders is just asking for a bore draw.

Have to say I wasn't sure about Whelan at the start of the season, but he and Amdy Faye are comfortably our best central midfield pairing, they've been excellent in the last few home games.

I'm rather worried that Pulis STILL seems to think that Diao and Faye are our best centre midfield partnership.
It's actually my only (but quite worryingly, and indeed quite serious) criticism of Pulis yesterday.
There is no doubt he intended to START with Salif and Amdy today.
I don't think it's any coincidence that Amdy's game has improved DRAMATICALLY since he has had Whelan along side of him.
I'm not suggesting that it's Whelan himself, that has made the difference, but rather, that he has improved so much due to Diao NOT being there, or actually more to the point, that it is not a defensive midfielder per se that is partnering him.
I think that both Salif and Amdy look better when they don't have their mirror image as a partner in midfield.
It is extremely worrying that based on the starting eleven that Pulis intended to start with yesterday, that our manager doesn't seem to have made the same observation.

In his post-match interview, he basically said he doesn't think there's a better holding midfielder in the country than Diao. A pretty astonishing comment!
So I think we can deduce it's going to be Salif + another, when fit.
Hopefully the '+ another' isn't at the club at the moment.

I agree Paul its like Amdy sat more because of Diao's crab pace movement.

Pulis thinks Diao is one of the best midfielders (in his position) in the premiership, so you can bet your bottom dollar he'll be straight in the team when fit, I have nothing against Diao or AmFaye, but I wouldn't play them both in the same side, they're far to similar.

How worrying is that, that Pulis thinks so highly of a lumbering gimp like him and a performance/result like that aginst the leaders that he would drop Whelan?
You should not change the midfield from yesterday.

no comparison, glen is playing superb, pulis always looked back at the draw at anfield and though with diou and faye we kept a clean sheet, well yesterday we kapt a clean sheet and created plenty of chances. whelan is by far the best central midfielder we have at the club, and will only get better. the two occasions we came close yesterday was by a superb ball to etherington which he croosed for the dissallowed goal, and his free kick that clipped the post. would salif do that?? no!

i like diao, but him and faye together just doesn't work, and whatever you think of whelan, the best balance is when whelan is played with faye/diao.
Olofinjana's transfer was a definate turkey

He was going to go with those two simply for the physical presence, it worked at their place. Glad Whelan played though, so unclucky to put that free kick about an inch wide.

Maybe against Liverpool you would though And whoever thinks Whelan is some kind of a creative genius is indulging in wishful thinking - his passing when I've seen him has been his worst feature. Why, when one player plays well, or even adequately, do we have to resort to abusing Diao? I have nothing against Whelan and hope he continues to progress, but let's not get carried away, or start some anti-Diao campaign. Mind you, Jarhead's post I can understand - this is the man who abused Sidibe throughout the promotion season and probably over the summer too, clearly needs a new target for his 'support'. I think the three players in this thread, with Delap once we get Lawrence and Etherington operating wide, will be good competition for the two CM slots. 2 good new forwards and a full back would be a fine window in my view.

TP's comments on radio were ' Diao is the best midfielder at the club by a country mile' and 'Diao is the best in the Prem in his particular role'. Diao is the first name on the team sheet when fit, Whelan is battling it out with a few others to play alongside him. Good though he was yesterday, he was overshadowed by Amdy. If we bring an experienced Prem midfielder into the mix he will fall further down the pecking order. However I look at things, I don't think Glenn has much of a future at Stoke. A shame really, because we were full of hope when we signed him.
