who goes where?
Surey Lawrence will command a starting spot and I doubt that Etherington has come here to warm the bench either, and we need rory on the pitch to bombard the opposition with missiles. But who gets the 4th spot?
I'd like to see Whelan get it as he has the right mix of quality and work rate, but I believe Tony will give it to Diao as according to him, he's "as good as anyone in this league" ???

Personally, i'd go for Lawrence Delap Am Faye and Etherington.
I think Delap has his obvious strengths and he'll mop up, as will Faye, so i think they'll get the ball and distrubute it to wide positions.

Yeah I heard TP say that last night, but to be fair we know Diao can be a good player, but he hasn't been fully fit for over a season.

I'd go for Lawrence Whelan Faye Etherington.
Really haven't been impressed with Delap lately, looks very one dimensional when on the ball, and whens the last time we scored off one of his throws? Must be 7-8 games ago now, i think the throws have been found out. Ofcourse the above midfield is based on us not signing another midfielder, if we do sign another decent winger, id have Lawrence in the CM as he just ain't a winger but hes the playmaker we need in the middle, and I'd obviously have the other winger on the right.

Easy - Delap at right back (where he has played well for Southampton) - sorted!

Forget Whelan, TP is trying to. The midfield will be Lawrence, Delap, Diao, Etherington. The one whose position is most suspect is Delap as Faye or a new signing could make the position their own. Last season we relied heavily on Lawrence's setpieces for goals. Rory's throw ins have been a bonus this year, but I expect to see a few goals from corners and free kicks now Lawrence is back.

I would persist with Rory as with the return of Liam and the signing of Etherington he would have to occupy a central role where he has been excellent for us. His workrate and defensive cover cannot be underestimated, couple that with his throws (lets not forget he's had a shoulder injury before people write them off) and he deserves his place. If his form isn't up to scratch then replace him with Faye or Diao.

Can't use his throws if he is at RB so why bother? Pulis plays with a flat back four, and if Rory is moving over to the other side of the pitch to throw, it leaves a big gap if the opposition counter attack.
Someone would therefore have to drop in, and the resulting confusion would see us conceed more than we'd score off the throws anyway.

No, I am saying that Rory is probably as good a right back as Griffin. Certainly faster and he has played there with some success before. As for the throws, I'd probably use his long throws from the right and not bother with using him for throws from the left.

Still no evidence that Pulis will play Lawrence and Ethers at the same time

I think that if we buy in another attacking midfielder, LL might find himself "elsewhere"

What a load of nonsense - when does any team have a "flat back four" for a corner or a long throw? Both centre-halves are in the oppostion penalty area anyway, there's no defensive shape to lose.

As is stands, it looks like 3 of the 4 slots are taken, if Pulis' very questionable statements about Diao being "the best midfielder at the club by a country mile" and there being no better holding midfielder in the country are anything to go by.
Lawrence-Diao-X-Etherington
Harsh on Faye, who is really starting to be effective, and Delap who's done consistently well, but I wouldn't like to think we'd be going with a Diao-Faye/Delap central duo as our preferred option for the remainder of the season.
I'd like to think the 4th regular isn't at the club yet,and would be comfortable in possession and slightly more forward-thinking.
I don't think Delap would be noticeably weaker than Griffin, Wilkinson or Davies at RB, if Pulis felt he had to be included for his throw.

What a load of nonsense?????
Right, so we are taking a throw on the left hand side, 15 yards into the opposition half? Where would the RB usually be in Pulis side? Either covering he middle if the CBs have moved up, or positioned on the right hand side of play ready to either push up to support an attack or drop back to defend.
Certainly not across the opposite side of play.
We play the flattest defense of any side I have seen in years. Have you actually watched any games recently? Bank of four at the back, bank of four sat in front of them. Yes we break to attack, but that is the formation that we always revert to.

Now, to throw things into the balance, IF Ledley comes then that is another "nice" problem fitting him in
Liam Diao Ledley Etherington
Rory - sub for the throw as back up or Right back ?
I have put Diao in because TP will, not saying i would

They've been such a potent weapon though. And ,once he got to work with his towel yesterday, they caused some genuine moments of panic.
I'm sure someone could drop into cover him at RB until the next break in play, for what is effectively a special-teams-like, discrete area of play, which provides us with one of our better chances of hurting the opposition
