Having supported the Mighty Potters now for almost four decades, today got me thinking about all the disappointing match's i have been to over the year's. As a very young lad being taken to the FA Cup 3rd round by my dad, bless him, I can actually remember being on the brink of shedding tear's if we got knocked out in the 3rd round. My dad would always turn to me and say don't get upset about it son, always next year. I could never understand this as i did not care about next year because i felt so desperate inside. Also the F A Cup seemed to mean so much more in those day's as did the atmosphere for the Final on a Saturday morning with BBC and ITV competing for the most viewers with wall to wall coverage from about half nine in the morning and The Bourne Sport's Sale in Stoke every Cup Final morning. Or is it just me ? Do they still have that sale ? Anyway i digress. I suppose what i am trying to say to you younger supporter's is stick with it. It's your team and a true fan is there for the long haul, through thick and thin. You just don't get as disappointed as you get older, you will probably find as you get older that Stoke just spoil a good day out with your mate's but no matter what if your a true Stokie, you will still Love them.
Anyways back to the point and the title of this thread. My most desperate night as a Stokie was.....
Losing at Aston Villa 1-0 in the mid 70's. We were in the top flight then and that result condemned us to the old second division. When we got dropped off at the Old Vic by the supporters coaches i can remember me and my mate Jez waiting for a bus to take us up to Hartshill outside the Old Registrar in Stoke. How desperate did i feel that night. Well
The most desperate i have ever felt as a Stokie
And You ?

when we lost in the playoff semi final to walsall. Watching Gudjon totally balls up with a team selection that looked like it had been picked at random and thinking that we would never get out of that sewer of a league was probably as low as i have felt- lower than all the relegations and thrashings.

I think it was the Bluthe Spartans debacle. I was only a lad and couldnt understand it at the time. We've had plenty of repeats since. (Notice stoke played in yellow shirts/blue shorts that game

When Pulis was re-appointed. Shows how wrong you can be, eh. OS. I'll agree with the first part of this quote. The second part I couldn't disagree with more. If he is still here at the end of the season it will be the first and last time my beloved Potters will see the Premier league.

Blyth Spartans-I was only 10/11 but it struck home how hard it was following Stoke-30 years later it isn't any easier.
And being beaten by Burnley 1-0,September 2006.They scored in the first minute and even if we'd played til today I don't think we'd have equalised.Don't remember ever being that depressed after a defeat.Went the pub,and to make matters worse ran into Dave Kevan(Burnley assistant manager at the time)in Langtrys-just about summed up my day!

Arrived in the UK (for a Potters watching/touring holiday) in the morning, and caught up with the SCSSC later that day for a car trip up to Telford for the first game of my holiday. Saw a crap game and I was left wondring why the hell had I forked out a fair amount of cash for what could have been a totally crap holiday...luckily things picked up from there (sort of) which made the trip ultimately ok.

The Bourne Sport's Sale in Stoke every Cup Final morning. Or is it just me ? Do they still have that sale ? Fantastic!!! How many fires & floods did Bournes have in the 70s???? Fond memories of dad bringing home funny coloured Adidas bags smelling slightly of smoke (the bag not me dad!)...... Anyhow, worst memories as a radio listening kid are the FA cup Semi defeats to Arsenal 71/72 and as a paying fan losing play-off semis to Stockport, Leicester & Gillingham....

Today, simply because reading the above list, and there are many others, Walsall away in 1973 as league cup holders, Telford, 5-1 at home to Leeds in the late 60s, losing the 1964 league cup over two legs to Liecester, the play off against Liecester, (and I could go on), makes me realise that losing to lower league and "lesser" teams is no longer a shock for my beloved club.
Now THAT'S depressing!

Hundreds - literally
But because of the importance of this season, probably Everton at home
Came out of the ground absolutely devastated that we had got sod all from a game where we fought back valiantly and had a goal disallowed, but threw it away with inept marking at a set piece
