Not sure if mentioned but thought I would let you know.
Ryan Shotton and Jimmy Phillips have both returned to Stoke having completed loan spells at Tranmere and Stafford respectively.
Richie de Laet is recovering from a double hernia operation after his loan spell at Wrexham.
Nat Wedderburn went off with a head injury for Notts County at the weekend but should be OK for tomorrow's televised game against Kettering.
Lewis Buxton played at left back for Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and the whispers from Yorkshire are that the loan spell will be made permanent in January.
Tom Thorley hasn't played since 22 November when he came on as a substitute for Burscough so I can only assume that he has now returned to the Britannia.

Do we know of any future loans planned for Phillips and Shotton?

Obviously they have to wait until January John, but I would have thought they will try and push them up another level.
Shotton is good enough for a lower reach Championship side (someone like Southampton) while Jimmy could, on his day, tear up the Conference Blue Square Premier.
As for Buxton, de Laet, Demar Phillips, Marc Grocott (who has also now returned from Stafford) and Tom Thorley, I see no future for them at Stoke. Time for permanent moves to further their career I'm afraid.

Just spoke to mar mate (massive sheff Wednesday fan, goes watch them all over.
Said abut buxton "ye he started off at right back, covered at center back when our center back got center off and is now playing regularly at left back cos tommy Spurr has been injured. Hes a good solid player to be fair"

Another reason for Bucko playing at left back is the return of Frankie Simek after a year out.

I was in London the day before the Spurs game and ended up watching Tranmere at Orient. Shotton didn't particularly impress -and obviously I kept a close eye on him- despite his long throw. His gait is very reminiscent of Wayne Thomas', I think!

Knowlsey - I think you are probably right about the other youngsters but I'm a bit sad if you think Thorley isn't worth sticking with a bit longer. I've only seen him a couple of time but he looked to have some potential.

Buxton was a bit unlucky not to get a few more chances after TP came back to Stoke. He played about twice a season but turned in decent performances each time I saw him (and he usually seemed to get a 7 in the Oatie ratings). Regular football may confirm that he can cut it at Championship level.
Hope he gets his move and does well at the Owls.

Shotton - from what I have seen could be a decent player, but to play for us he needs to seriously continue to progress.
Phillips - As I have said before, I know the guy personally, but everytime I have seen him he has seriously impressed me. Massive pace, good skill, hits good shots and is strong for a small guy.
Wedder - Strong player and I think his time will come
Groaks / Thorley etc. - Thorley has been reasonably impressive when I have seen him, but always seems to need controlling by the captain and spoonfed. Grocott looks a little nervous everytime I have seen him, same with De Laet.

The problem is John is that we are now in the Premier League and youngsters who come through must be seen as having the potential to make it at this level.
I just can't see it with the players I mentioned. Someone like Adam Vass stood out and you could tell he could make it at a high level, same with Wedderburn and, to a degree, Shotton.
Jimmy has something different to the rest of our squad- pace and trickery so it is certainly worth sticking with him for the next couple of years to see how he develops.

Thanks for the update Knowles, it's great to know how they are getting on!
Wedderburn seems to be the main one to keep an eye on it seems, then Shotton and Phillips have potential as well. It's only 3 players though, in recent years not many managed to step up in the Championship (Dicko,Wilko?) so to be able to step up in the Prem is a massive ask (if we stay up that is). But I would love it to settle in the Prem and be able to bring one or two into the side.
Best of luck to the lads and I hope they continue to develop well while out on loan!

We've got to hope that if we stay in the Prem for a year or two it will attract better quality youngsters to join the Academy. The payoff may not be seen for a few years yet. In the meantine let's hope that Shotton, Wedderburn and Phillips continue to progress. If one of them makes a Premiership player that is probably par for the course.

The trend with all these good young players is that most never seem to ever make it to becoming top flight PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS.
I not going to offer reasons as to why this is, but it is obviously something that needs to be looked at.Perhaps the introduction of Gerry Francis into the coaching system may improve this 'bottle neck' , although I think he is more involved in the first team squad. If a player hasn't shown the ability by 20 or 21, then the likelihood is that he never will.

Yes John, if one makes it then we've done fairly well I would guess. If you have a look at the other Premier League clubs then this is the quality of players they have produced (and are currently playing for them): Liverpool (established Prem side)- Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher Chelsea (established Prem side)- John Terry Man Utd (established Prem side)- Gary Neville, Wes Brown, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans, Fraiser Campbell Arsenal (established Prem side)- Niklas Bendtner and 'famed' Carling Cup side (more to do with scouting system?) Aston Villa (established Prem side)- Gabriel Agbonlahor, Craig Gardner, Isaiah Osbourne Hull- nobody of note Portsmouth (established Prem side)- nobody of note (but have produced Gary O'Neil recently) Everton (established Prem side)- Victor Anichebe, James Vaughan, Tony Hibbert, Leon Osman, Jack Rodwell, Jose Baxter Fulham (established Prem side)- nobody of note Bolton (established Prem side)- Kevin Nolan, Joey O'Brien Wigan (pretty established now)- nobody of note (but have produced Leighton Baines recently) Middlesbrough (established Prem side)- Ross Turnbull, Adam Johnson, David Wheater Stoke (soon to be established )- Carl Dickinson, Andy Wilkinson Man City (established Prem side)- Ched Evans, Daniel Sturridge, Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland, Michael Johnson, Kelvin Etuhu Tottenham (established Prem side)- Ledley King, Jamie O'Hara West Ham (established Prem side)- Mark Noble, Freddie Sears (and have also produced the like of Rio/Anton Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe in recent years) Newcastle (established Prem side)- Steven Taylor, Shola Ameobi, Andy Carroll. Sunderland (not established yet)- Grant Leadbitter Blackburn (established Prem side)- Keith Treacy, David Dunn (via Birmingham City) West Brom- Jared Hodgkiss So, not sure what this proves apart from local talent is still around. Most 'established' sides have at least one player who is a major part of their team. Wouldn't it be lovely to see Wedderburn become the spine of our side for the next decade?

Interesting reading Knowles- one pick though is Bendtner at Arsenal, a bit like saying they produced Wallcott as he was pretty hot property and was linked with a few clubs as a youngster but they did bring him to his current level so to speak so see your point.
Might be wrong but pretty sure Arsenal released Jamie O'Hara from there academy not so long back which was a bad move as looks like a real prospect

Yeah me and Knowles were talking about Arsenals youth set up at Coventry the other day and how it is all a big con and that they produce no players, they just snap up players at 15/16/17 and introduce them into the first team squad over time. People then believe they've produced these players. Players who are produced by clubs are players like Tom Thorley who has been at Stoke since the age of 7.

Nathaniel Wedderburn didn't play for Notts County (who lost 2-0 at Chester) due to a knee injury. Thankfully it doesn't appear as bad as Mama's! www.nottscountyfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10426~1486316,00.html Meanwhile, Lewis Buxton played 90 minutes at right back for Sheffield Wednesday, who kept a clean sheet against Bristol City (0-0).

Grocott is back from Stafford now and it's highly unlikely that he'll be going back in Jan given the financial state of rangers at the minute. Hopefully the club can sort somewhere else out for him though.
