Sorry if posted anywhere else but couldn't see it. In the Star today page 19, in a full page article, Mama admitted that he used to be a drug pusher, when living in Paris. He claims his old man got him out of it by giving him a good kicking if he saw him hanging round with "bad guys". I'm surprised he's opened up about something like this and it will surely open him up to abuse from other fans. I have to admit to being a wee bit disappointed by it and him. I would have prefered he kept it to himself. It's not something I wanted to hear or know about one of our players.

Maybe he had a tip-off that some journo had got dirt on him so felt the need to admit to it before being "exposed".

I can see how it'll be a problem for Mama facing the opposition fans wrath:
'Mama Sidibie Grew up in a tough area And was a bit of a naughty boy But with strong parental guidance Hard work & dedication He went onto Premier league football An excellent salary And an outstanding lifestyle And is an inspiration and roll model to young fans'
Yes - I'm sure we can all feel your disappointment stokesaint1.

What a strange attitude you have Stoke Saint. Surely the best way to get kids out of the habit of using and pushing drugs is not just to give them role models who have always been whiter than white but to show them how hard work and dedication can turn a life around. Mama started life as an immigrant kid in a sink estate, got in with the wrong crowd, sold drugs, responded to parental discipline and then turned his life around through football. So much so that he is now a £millionaire and supports his extended family in the UK, France and Mali. Not only that but he is still proud to play for the country of his birth despite the fact that doing so nearly cost him his life.
Exactly what bit of that story would any supporter not wish to know about? It would make a good film script - although it would be a better ending if he could score the winning goal for Stoke at Wembley in a cup final!

have to agree with mumph, lakeland et al here. So Mama did some bad things in his time, he made some mistakes. The measure of a man is not how many mistakes he makes, but how he learns from those mistakes. Mama turned his life around and is now an excellent role model. When you read about his friend ending up with a bag around his head, you realise just how close Mama was to potential disaster, but he ended up making the right choices and is now rich and happy. The way he looks after his entire family, not just those immediate to him also shows just whata decent person he really is. Mama has gone up in my estimations because of this story, not down.
Good on you Mama, may your fine example show young people everywhere that they too can make something of their lives.

We live in a shitty world. Fair play to Mama for getting out and kudos to Papa Mama for kicking his boy into sorting his life out. Bad content but good story for kids. Good role model. Got to be better than someone like Cashley Cole being a cheating (on and off the pitch) moaning tosser.

I do agree fair play to Mama for turning it round, although I think more praise must go to his old man. I am still however disappointed that one of our players had anything to do with drugs, in the first place. If this had been a player from other teams, or perhaps a player who had chosen to go elswhere after playing at Stoke, mentioning no names, no doubt they would have been slated. Drugs destroy peoples lives.

SS1 - No doubting how bad drugs are and I don't condone using them but football fans can't sit up on their thrones and look down on Mama for what has happened. If he come out and said I was a user last season then fair do's, I'd be concerned and disappointed but judging him on stuff that happened to him as a kid. Can't do it. As I said before, we live in a shit world and people sometimes have to do shitty stuff to get by. I imagine if we had a look into the past of a lot of footballers we'd see a lot of shit whether it is theft, drug using, fights, everything. I bet some of 'em still do.
At end of the day, it took a lot for him to admit this and open himself to criticism.

good people sometimes do bad things. It's how you deal with the mistakes you make, rather than whether or not you actual make mistakes.
Can any of us honestly say that, given Mama's cicumstances in his youth, we wouldn't have gone off the rails????? Many many people join gangs, yet not all of them can be bad guys so to speak, thankfully for Mama, with the help of his dad, he found a way out. Maybe his example will help others to find the courage to find their own way out of drugs, gangs etc.

Mama is a role model, and if anything, this latest revelation simply adds to my admiration of the big guy. Everyone can make a mistake. The important thing is the here and now, and Mama is a shining light to youngsters everywhere. Its never too late to change, and with hard work you can be a success. Mama's story is simply incredible, and it can't have been easy to come out with. The comment further up the board about being disappointed in Mama is ridiculous. Mama, we're all proud of you, for what you've become!

Are some of you on crack?
I think you'll find that Mama 'turned his life around' because he was capable of being a Premiership footballer.
Fornside, I want you to be sent to Deptford and tell the bad boyz how they can use Mama as a role model and move onto better things - oh, apart from the baddies that are fucked if they run up two flights of stairs and can't kick a ball for toffee. I'd love to see what your advice would be then.
Would it be 'Lose five stone, knock 12 seconds off your 100m time and watch the David Beckham video' or 'I guess you're fucked, shoot the top guy and move into his flat'?
