Lord, I understand your point that kids should play for fun and rightly so, i fully agree with it.
But what I'm saying is as a coach you want to win games and score goals, it will otivated and want to come to training etc.
Try look at it like this.
you're coach an you want to play sexy football. but every other team in your league plays hoof the ball, chase it and score as many goals as you can, and you loose 8 or 9 nil every game, do you think your team are going to be enjoying it? So like you rightly point out, theres nothing wrong with throwing the ball into the area
James, you are right but i don't know if and when that will come into power it was a suggestion made my mr brooking but as a referee we havent been told not to keep score. yet anyway!!!
If anything throws should be encourages especially at young ages.
throwing a ball is a fundemental motor skill and improves hand eye co ordination which is invaluable in life especially when playing sorts
Another thing ive noticed is at school year 7 there are so many players who can't take throw in correctly. So it's good that Rory is giving kids someone to look up to, so now they are practicing throws. Lets face it, throw ins are relativly important in a game

Only just noticed this thread. What a cheap and bitter shot, what a nasty piece of work Mick Dennis is. How he and his like make a living out of writing for the nationals is both a baffling and scary thought. Journalism is definitely the poorer for you, Dennis.
Rory might be able to chuck it, Ronaldo might do a decent step over, but as has been said - give me one honest Rory Delap and his work in the local community, over a thousand arrogant strutting, smug winking, prostitute swapping, move engineering, eyebrow plucking, diving cheating, childish stomping, enslaved Ronaldo's. Any day of the week.

trumpton,
Don't get fooled by journos like Dennis. The fact is that in most games, at kids' level and in the prem, the ball is in play more often than it's in touch and the kids have plenty of time to develop their skills.
The thing that is often overlooked is that if you are playing against a team witha long throw you encourage your defenders not to put it out, and theefore develop other more skilfull strategies to avoid having to defend the long throw.
If you have a lad who can put in a long throw you can coach his team mates about finding space, timing runs, decoy runs, volleying, chest control, reacting to the seond ball as well as heading technique and bravery. (There are complementary skills to be learnt from a defensive point of view.)
Finally, if your opponents are expecting the long throw, the kids need to learn how to vary their tactics so that they don't become predictable.
The long throw is a legal, valid and effective tactic which brings excitement to the game a nd a host of learning opportunities. It has also shown that some multi millionaire coaches and their highly paid defenders are not particularly good value for money.
Long live the Rory!

;D
I just find it bizarre. It's the second time in a fortnight (after the Guardian Man Utd report) where we've basically been slated for not having more 'Ronaldo's' in our team. Stoke are killing the beautiful game??
