with the bookies........... www.racingpost.co.uk/news/master.sd?psection=racingpost.co.uk&page=Football%20-%20Latest&category=News&story_id=1002925Magic 40 may not be enoughby Ian Wilkerson . FOR top-flight teams that feel ambitions of Champions League and Uefa Cup places are far too lofty and are banking on Premier League survival, the magic number of points is 40. It's a cliche almost out of the sick as a parrot book, but a host of managers and fans are swiftlycoming to the conclusion that such a total might not be enough to guarantee safety and Bet365 agree. They go 8-11 that the team who finish 17th in the Premier League this season will get more than 41.5 points – and that has only happened twice since 1996. Fulham stayed up with 36 points last season, pipping Reading on goal difference and Wigan sent Sheffield United down by the same margin when both had accumulated 38 points the season before. West Ham, in 2003, are the only team to have gone down having accumulated 42 points, and there seems little hope this season (three points separate bottom-placed West Brom and Fulham in tenth) that the 34 points the Baggies secured their future with in 2005 will prove to be enough. Nothing will be decided yet, but a host of teams could find themselves in the bottom three by 5pm today. Had West Brom not been facing Premier League leaders Chelsea later it could have been an interesting market, but with ten teams available at 7-1 or shorter forrelegation it promises to remain intriguing. Bet365 – points won by team finishing 17th: 8-11 over 41.5, evs under 41.5. THE POINT OF RELEGATION Total points attained by teams finishing 17th and 18th in the Premier League 17th 18th 2007-08 Fulham 36 Reading 36 2006-07 Wigan 38 Sheff U 38 2005-06 P'mouth 38 B'ham 34 2004-05 WBA 34 C Palace 33 2003-04 Everton 39 Leicester 33 2002-03 Bolton 44 West Ham 42 2001-02 Sunderland 40 Ipswich 36 2000-01 Derby 42 Man City 34 1999-00 Bradford 36 W'don 33 1998-99 Soton 41 Charlton 36 1997-98 Everton 40 Bolton 40 1996-97 Coventry 41 Sunderland 40 1995-96 Soton 38 Man City 38

It looks like 2008/9 will be bucking the trend...40 points may not be enough to guarantee survival...
Points lost now are not recuperable later on in the season either such is the importance of WBA/Hull...

We just have to win our "mini league" and that'll give us the best chance, these next two games are massive for us.....

It would be ironic if we were relegated from the Premier League with a points total that in recent years would've guaranteed surivival after winning automatic promotion with a total that in past seasons would've only been good enough for a play off place.
One thing's for certain, we won't reach 40 points or beyond if don't sort out our away form.

correct, although we may not need to pick up too many points away from home, we are currently averaging 2 points per home match which would give us 38

It will be a lot tighter thats for sure, maybe we won't quite need 40 points, we will have to wait and see.

P19 W0 D6 L13 Pts6 HOMEP6 W4 D0 L2 Pts 12 Extrapolating... P13 W12 D1 L6 Pts 37 And according to my math that gives us a grand total of 43 points... Which means... We Are Staying-Up... ;D

40 points has always been the holy grail for staying up-though not always. Just feel that our home form will falter for a bit,but hopefully we will win at least(?)a couple away and survive with about 38-41.

WHU went down with 42 in 2003. Blimey. That was unlucky.

Yep probably 43 which with our current away form will mean another 8 victories at the Brit...Mind you we have a real chance of winning the next 3 so might not be quite so daunting
