Bollocks are we.
A national identity involves a sense of your traditional pass times, music, cuisine, history and language. If we're losing our identity to this tide of immigrants the tabloids keep telling us about then we would be able to demonstrate our traditional identity had in some way been altered over the last 50 to 100 years.
A century ago the English would have shopped in the local butchers or greengrocers, eaten meat and two veg, supped some Dandelion & Burdock or a real ale, listened to others playing folk or hymns and spoken their local dialect of English.
Today we're more likely to drive the SUV down to the out of town shopping centre full of global brands, pick up a KFC or a McDonald's, drunk some Coke or a Budweiser, listen to R&B, Hip-Hop or Rock and say "hi" to a few "buddies" before "hanging out" at the "mall".
If you're worried about losing our national identity, too late. We've willingly thrown it all away for some kind of homogenised North American mediocre dream.
If you think you're likely to go home tonight and be forced to tuck into some halal meat with couscous and listen to some bhangra then you're deluding yourself. Likewise, if you seriously think that "Brussels" is impacting your life in any meaningful way then you've been reading too much Daily Mail.
There's only one cultural impact that's changing our national identity, the USA, and we've bought into it willingly. That's no reflection on the Yanks, fair play to them, but come on, let's drop this ridiculous 'immigrants' shite shall we?

A lot of the movements towards american style culture can be traced back to when they entered the second world war, they came over talking about a great life style and it began to leech its way in.
So the american immigrants and soldiers who came over during these times did begin to influence some subtle changes, but on the other hand, when sharia law is being considered being integrated into our own legal practices and provisions being made for ethnic minorities to not be discriminated against we are losing our identity; afterall, there was a time when the first priority in Britain was keeping the British masses happy and content.
To say it is all down to the americanisation is wrong, but then to blame it all on middle eastern immigrants is equally wrong, its a toxic blend of the two. But I've grown up with the sunday breakfast and some traditional values instilled lol, so all is not lost ;D

mumf, you forgot the candles when the gas mantle burned out and Hilda forgot to get some from the Co-op. You're slipping. Tch! There's a lot of truth in what has already been said, but a lot of misconceptions too. The Yanks have changed our culture enormously but, mostly, it's been for the better. Immigration from Asian countries has had a different affect...not all of it bad. Thank God we've changed our colloquial eating habits from mundane to varied. Sometimes, exquisite: due to them. The downside is that Asian immigration has changed our society from a, mostly, secular one, to one that now has to encompass religion as a way of life. And, we have been made to accept their religion on fear of prosecution. The greatest loss, IMHO, has been the erosion of the freedom of speech. Now, we have to be very careful of what we say and where we say it. There should always be responsibility when we say things, but that was, usually, self-regulated. Now, it's policed. Can we blame it all on immigration? I think not. Our society has regressed to a point where 'Big Brother' is becoming a reality. That is down to over-government floundering with modern technology. They're frightened of the power it has unleashed. The next step is to hold records of every mobile phone user and each conversation made. That is already being processed. What next? Open our mail? Oh, I forgot, they already have the power to do that. OS.

when I were a lad we used to live in a paper bag in a septic tank, get up at 6 in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work at th' mill, work 14 hours a day week in week out for 6d a week, then got home for Dad to thrash us asleep with his belt....Luxury!!!! You try telling the young 'uns of today that and they'd never believe you!
