ok today wasn't good, but in the end we earned a useful point if you look at the league. We have actually consolidated our league position further. It's now time to put the league on hold now and look to next weekend. I do believe we have a good chance of toppling the North East giants or at least getting a draw. We have never been a brilliant FA Cup side, but when we have been paired against big opposition at home we have usually given whoever it was a game. Positive predictions only please!!

2-1 stoke
they have everything to lose, as does big sam, notably his job, and whilst are defence is shaky, there's is dodgy aswell, i really hope fuller plays as he will be the key to unlocking there defence, and potentially winning us the game.

I wonder if there will be any new faces before the Newcastle game. Nugent? Earnshaw? After yesterday it is clear we need another striker in addition to the black hole we have in midfield.

I think that we can pull something out of the bag against newcastle as they are performing terrible at the minute,we just need to attack them and go for a win.Hopefully fuller will be available as heard his mother died and was apparently goin home.

It was his grandmother who died. Apparently it was she who mainly raised him when he was a kid.

My best mate from uni is a big newcastle fan and I went with him to watch chelsea v newcastle last saturday.
In the first half both teams looked ordinary- trying to play the ball as early as possible into the channels behind the full backs. As previously mentioned on this thread, Newcastle looked vulnerable from most set pieces- Alex won plenty of headers almost unmarked, and when Newcastle did manage to clear it it was rarely further than the edge of the box.
In the second half castle were much more lively- playing more passing football in the midfield and counter attacking with more speed. N'Zogbia looked very dangerous when pushing forward from left back and latterly left wing, and Nicky Butt worked his socks off all game. However, the defence were still not convincing and martins on his own up front was very isolated. When viduka and owen came on they were alittle more threatening but failed to create many clear cut chances- the goal came from a missed tackle and was scrappy.
I think that stoke will be able to pressure Newcastle on that form by playing direct football (as per usual). Newcastle did look comfortable when the ball was being stroked patiently around the midfield by chelsea, but struggled defending their final third.
I was drinking with the geordies before the game and out afterwards- they are not looking forward to the match, particularly Fuller seems to worry them! Their general consensus about Big Sam is that he needs time to get his team together, but that if they lose tonight (Wednesday) and against Stoke he will be sacked. They may be struggling to sell their allocation because there are no trains back to Newcastle on the sunday night from stoke with the ko at that time, although the club are putting on coaches at cost price.
Can't wait for the game come on you mighty potters!!!!

stoke will run around a lot -press, create a few half chances then, after about an hour or so -they'll bring Michael Owen on and score a simple winner
THE FA CUP IS A WASTE OF TIME ! why bother ?

Come on lets get behind the boys and give em a great support at the Brit on Sunday...

doesnt seem like martins will be playing anyway
this from newcastle evening chronicle
Mark Viduka will be hoping his record at St James’s Park will be enough, while Oba Martins will probably get his last home start tonight until who knows when, as he is due to report with Nigeria for their African Cup campaign in the next couple of days.
United have asked that Martins be allowed to play in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie at Stoke City, but at the moment this has fallen on deaf ears

stoke will run around a lot -press, create a few half chances then, after about an hour or so -they'll bring Michael Owen on and score a simple winner THE FA CUP IS A WASTE OF TIME ! why bother ? The same question getting the same answer for about the sixth year running but... Because if (a big if, I know) we win we pocket around £150,000 in prize money, plus the prospect of being drawn against another Premiership side and more revenue...money we're desperate for. And if we win it will be a massive confidence boost to the team which in turn will doubtless have a knock on effect in our league form.

DaveF -as you know, Id happily put the U 11 girls out - its a hopeless competition now, in fact its not a competition at all - just try printing off the last 15 years finalists - youll see they virtually ALL come from the names of the same 4 clubs.
AND -DaveF - much as I respect you, I take it you'd happily by a ticket in a raffle even though the winning ticket had already been drawn then ?
as for me - Id say WHY BOTHER ?
and, as for us drawing 'big clubs' to make money - I find that insulting -and a sad enditement to the way our very own FA have stood by and allowed our game to be so distorted by money - it simply isnt compettive anymore
hence, why I dismiss this whole exercise as futile and, a waste of time and resources, better used for our league campaign
ME I'll watch that one on telly, still hoping we win but, saving my precious funds for the far more important league campaign
so -smite away again all of you -see if I bloody well care !!!!!!

here you lot -cop aload of this---
2005-06 Liverpool 3-3 West Ham United (after extra time, Liverpool won 3:1 on penalties) 2004-05 Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United (after extra time, Arsenal won 5:4 on penalties) 2003-04 Manchester United 3-0 Millwall 2002-03 Arsenal 1-0 Southampton 2001-02 Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea 2000-01 Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal 1999-2000 Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa 1998-99 Manchester United 2-0 Newcastle United 1997-98 Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle United 1996-97 Chelsea 2-0 Middlesbrough 1995-96 Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool 1994-95 Everton 1-0 Manchester United 1993-94 Manchester United 4-0 Chelsea 1992-93 Arsenal 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday
get my drift ?
WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS COMPETITON EXACTLY ?

And where do you hope this far "more important league campaign" you talk about will lead to Tone?
Stoke being promoted to the Premiership...a division which only three teams have a realistic chance of winning, which certainly isn't competitive because, as you say, the FA have stood by and allowed our game to be so distorted by money and in which we'd be lucky to win five matches!
What would be the point of bothering with THAT Tone?

The point of that is this - much as I despise it , I revert unfortunately to- 'if you cant beat them - join them' , perhaps if stoke city got their overdue slice of the ill gotten gains within the rotten stinking premier league
The massive chip on my shoulder about my team being unable to compete fairly at the very top level - may just fall off !
