man united have refused 3 teams to take him on loan,he is just coming back from injury and fergie want him in and out of the first team soon, (for cup games) why couldn't stoke see what a good keeper he is, or did they see the cash and that was it????

We did see for the good keeper he was but at the time we had two better keepers. We cashed in and rightly so imo!

I think he's out for the rest of the season Nick, had surgery earlier this year, maybe MU want to control his comeback, but i know what you mean about selling him, without doubt he will be Englands number 1 in 2007/08 season, decent money though for stoke but maybe a little shortsighted :-(

Not really - we had two good keepers in the side and we loaned Foster out - United then came in for him at the end of that season with an excellent offer - were we supposed to tell him that he couldn't go to Manchester United because we needed him to sit on our bench? Or drop Simonsen who'd had a fantastic season for us and established himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in the division?
Hindsight is always 20/20.

I heard an interesting theory that as most goalkeepers are much of a muchness, teams pick their goalkeepers on how far they can kick a ball. Foster has a decent kick on him and is fairly competent, so he's sought after. Just a theory though.

Hells here. Foster is a quality Keeper, thanks to the coaching he had whilst at Stoke. Taking nothing away from his obivois natural albility this was 'fostered' (sorry no pun intended) by Ronnie Sinclair. The sale of Foster was inevitable, as stated by previous posters, there wasn't a gap/place for him at the time. Ed and Simo kept the lad out of first team selection. I've watched him for many years and beleive, as does AF, that he can do the job. England? Why not. On a personal note may I add, that being a Parent of a Goalie totally changes the way I view a match. Hxx

A million quid for a player who never made a 1st team appearance is very good business.

I can't believe there is anyone who still thinks we should have kept him! As has been said numerous times - we had Simmo and De Goey keeping him out of the team, rightly so also. Man U offer us a decent amount of money when we have those two in the squad and he hadn't even played a 1st team game . . it's pretty obvious that you take the cash! Particularly when we were £8 million quid in debt!

Now my way of looking at the Foster situation was why did it take a Manager the calibre of Sir Alex to spot him,I was never aware of his capabilities when I watched him play.Nor were many others I suspect.

Once he went out on loan to Wrexham it was fairly clear that he had great potential. He had a great second half of the season at Wrexham and was man of the match by a country mile at the Millenium Stadium. Plenty of people raved about his performance - not just Sir Alex who watched the game.
Having said that, we could not keep three keepers of the calibre of Simo, Ben and Ed on the books. If a big bid had materialised for Simo we might have let him go and kept Ben and Ed - but the big bid came in for Ben and we were right to accept it.

Great bit of business for Stoke and from what I've heard from within ManU he's doing really well.

it was good business for him and how do we know that he would have played much for stoke. he has had games at watford, which was what he needed and hopefully now he is in the frame at united and for england, better than sitting on the bench at stoke?

At the time, ed de Goey was about 56 and the choice was either give him another 12 month contract or free him and promote Foster to second choice keeper.
How can anybody argue that the former was the right thing to do?
Simmo is a decent goalie, but any idiot can see that Foster is a far better keeper. If we'd have hung on to him, he would have eventually displaced Simmo as No.1 and would have been worth five times what we got for him.
Sorry, but this was a mistake by Pulis.

Ronnie really worked hard with Ben at Stoke but the level of goalkeeper training at ManU is something else, which you would expect.
Not sure if Ben would have come on under the new first team keeper coach, who I understand has never actually played as a keeper or has the appropriate qualifications. We've all seen the recent downturn in Simmo's performances and the coincidence is just too great to ignore. Get Ronnie back in to the first team training regime ASAP.

How can you not have keeper coach training a keeper. Technique and skills are so different for a keeper than a outfield player and if you don't understand the needs of keeper it's going to tell.

Trousers - That's bollocks. We hadn't signed Simmo at the time of extending De Goey's contract. If we'd have pissed about we could have started the season without a senior keeper on the books.
We only signed Simmo after De Goey had re-committed to the club. It would have been a huge gamble to kick off that season with an ancient goalie and a rookie, which was why Simmo's arrival was a Godsend.

If i was Foster and Stoke came for me I would say fook off "I see you've realised i'm a decent GK eventually." Sure that's what he'll be thinking.
