Stoke are emerging as genuine promotion contenders under former Argyle manager Tony Pulis.
The Potters moved up to third spot in the Championship after their thrilling 3-3 draw away to Barnsley on Boxing Day.
That followed a hugely impressive 3-1 home defeat of table-topping West Bromwich Albion at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.
Stoke are unbeaten in their last eight games and are only three points behind second-place Watford.
They have not tasted defeat since November 10, when they lost 1-0 at home to Sheffield United.
What has been particularly eye-catching has been the number of goals Stoke have been scoring.
Pulis is not renowned for sending out sides who find the back of the net with regularity.
But the Potters have done just that recently, scoring 20 goals in the last seven games.
Stoke trailed Barnsley three times on Boxing Day, but showed their strength of character by leaving Oakwell with a point.
Midfielder Liam Lawrence made it 3-3 in the 90th minute with his second penalty of the match, which also completed his hat-trick.
Lawrence is Stoke's second-highest scorer this season with eight goals, three behind Jamaican striker Ricardo Fuller.
He netted all of the goals in the victory over West Brom, which proved that Stoke must be regarded as serious promotion candidates.
Fuller said: "There is a great atmosphere in the dressing room and we believe we can do whatever we want this season."
West Brom boss Tony Mowbray added: "In Ricardo Fuller they have got a hot striker who is in form and gave us a few problems.
"We played against a decent strikeforce and the quality they have got up front was evident."
Stoke will be aiming to complete the double over Argyle after beating them 3-2 at the Britannia Stadium on September 22.
The Pilgrims led 2-1, after goals from defender Marcel Seip and striker Rory Fallon, before the Potters battled back.
Lawrence equalised in the 66th minute and Fuller scored what proved to be the winning goal seven minutes later.
Pulis has picked the same starting line-up and substitutes for the last five matches.
The defence has included three loan signings - centre-backs Leon Cort (Crystal Palace) and Ryan Shawcross (Manchester United), plus left-back Danny Pugh (Preston North End).
Right-back Stephen Wright has also been borrowed from Sunderland but he has missed the last couple of matches because of a head wound. Andy Wilkinson has proved to be a more than able deputy for him.
Former Liverpool midfielder Dominic Matteo has also been sidelined recently by a foot injury.
Pulis did his homework on Argyle by sending assistant manager Lindsay Parsons to Home Park for the Pilgrims' 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day.
