Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton has been arrested by police in Liverpool following an alleged assault. The footballer was arrested along with a 19-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman on Church Street in the city centre at 0530 GMT. Merseyside Police confirmed the three were being held in custody. A spokesman said: "All three remain in custody for interview and processing and I expect a decision on charges or release will be made later tonight." THUG  |

What happened to being innocent before being found guilty?
Don’t get me wrong, I too think he is a rate cunter but we don’t know what’s happened here yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was up to no good given his past antics but he shouldn’t be judged on this basis, should he?

Footballer Joey Barton will spend the New Year behind bars after being charged with common assault and affray.
The magistrate said he was being kept in custody ahead of his next hearing for the protection of the general public.

Barton, from Widnes, Cheshire, appeared at Liverpool City Magistrates Court where he was remanded in custody until January 3.
He will then appear before the court via video link.
The 25-year-old Newcastle United player was held after an incident in Liverpool city centre.
Magistrate Carol Myers said there were no conditions to satisfy the requirements of the Bail Act.
She said there was a substantial risk of Barton offending again because the new offences took place while on bail.
She added: "I also have to consider the safety of the public - you lashed out indiscriminately."

On hearing the decision, Barton turned to the prison guard beside him and held his hands out to be cuffed before being returned to the cells.
Barton appeared alongside two others charged in connection with the same incident.
Andrew Barton, 19, from Widnes, has been charged with actual bodily harm and affray and has been released on bail.
Nadine Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside, is charged with common assault and affray and has also been released on bail.
Barton is believed to have been partying with friends after being ruled out of Newcastle's 1-0 defeat to Wigan on Boxing Day with an ankle injury.
The footballer, who grew up in Huyton, Merseyside, signed for Newcastle from Manchester City this summer in a £5.8m deal.
