You don't even have to have seen any of the match to see that that is an absurdly biased "report" (although I use the term report loosely).

Also, just for the benefit of any Barnsley fan perusing the board... 4 minutes of stoppage time means 4 minutes of the ball in play - it doesn't include the 1 minute it took for Barnsley to make a sub in the 4th minute of stoppage time, nor does it include time wasted by Barnsley waiting for a free kick then penalty.

CONTROVERSIAL referee Trevor Kettle robbed the Reds of a thoroughly deserved and hard fought win by awarding Stoke a penalty seven minutes into stoppage time at Oakwell.

Reds boss Simon Davey made two changes to the side that was very harshly done by at Bristol City last weekend with Sam Togwell and Grant McCann coming in to replace Anderson De Silva and Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Stoke included former Reds youngster Jon Parkin amongst their substitutes.

Stoke started their bombardment as early as the first minutes as a hopeful punt into the area put Heinz Muller under pressure but the Reds did well to clear as Mamady Sidebe got a header back towards goal.

A minute later McCann brought a fine save from Steve Simonsen with a swinging free kick from 30 yards but the Stoke keeper managed to hold the ball.

Martin Devaney then broke through the Stoke backline on five minutes to race onto Brian Howard's quick free kick but the visitors were able to just about clear his cross before Macken could pounce.

At the other end Rory Delap almost got in behind the Reds on six minutes but Devaney was quickly back to make an important block.

Barnsley pushed on and almost caught Stoke out at their own game on 15 minutes as Togwell's long throw bounced through to Macken but the striker saw his shot well blocked on its way to goal.

At the other end Fuller threw himself over Dennis Souza's leg to win a free kick for Stoke right on the edge of the area a minute later but Liam Lawrence's cross came to nothing.

Howard did wonderfully well on 18 minutes as the Reds football sliced through Stoke and the midfielder sent a fine cross for Macken but his header just looped the wrong side of the bar with Simonson scrambling.

The closest Stoke came to seriously worrying Muller was on 21 minutes when Souza's clearance fell nicely to Lawrence but the winger lashed his shot well over the bar from 20 yards.

Simonson then had to be at his very, very best to turn away Istvan Ferenczi's point blank header from Devaney's excellent cross.

The Reds did not let the pressure drop and from Howard's corner Richard Cresswell needlessly flattened Macken in the area as the pair waited for the ball to drop. It was a stupid challenge to make and referee Trevor Kettle rightly pointed to the spot. Howard coolly put the penalty past Simonson.

Stoke pushed on and Lawrence planted a header just wide on 25 minutes as again the visitors pummelling brand of football almost paid dividends in the area.

Barnsley were a foot away from a second goal on 26 minutes as Souza met Marciano Van Homoet's free kick on the penalty spot. The ball dropped for Stephen Foster but the defender could not loop it past Simonson under pressure.

Stoke were always dangerous and Van Homoet had to put his body on the line on 27 minutes to stop Lawrence reaching Delap's cross but the Dutchman did enough under pressure.

Ferenczi almost got in on 29 minutes as the ball broke in the area from another Togwell throw. It eventually came out to McCann but the midfielder found Simonsen in the right place to stop his effort.

Referee Kettle kept up his reputation for controversy at Oakwell as he harshly pointed to the spot on the half hour after Souza had tussled with Fuller on the byline. Lawrence planted the penalty past Muller and into the bottom corner.

Fuller was giving Souza nightmares and again he left the Brazlian stranded on 36 minutes to cross and Muller was left watching as Sidebe planted a header just wide.

Delap then should have been sent off a minute later after completely losing head and flying straight through Togwell on the half way line. It was a ridiculous challenge but the referee only brandished a yellow card.

Delap then had a chance to redeem himself on 44 minutes as he found space on the edge of the area but his wayward shot was more danger to the floodlights then Muller's goal.

There was still time in the first half for Howard to pick up a caution after Lawrence his the deck over his outstretched leg. Lawrence swung the free kick in but Foster was in the right place to clear. Lawrence had another chance to deliver a minute later after crashing to the ground under McCann's tackle. This time Leon Cort planted his looping header over the bar.

For a side with Stoke's reputation for tough, uncompromising football, they certainly throw themselves to the deck easily as Souza found out as he stood strong against Sidibe on 50 minutes. The six foot plus striker hit the deck as if he had been shot by a sniper in the stands but thankfully Danny Pugh wasted the free kick and lashed it into the wall from the edge of the area.

Stoke played the ball around well in the Reds defensive third on 53 minutes as were unlucky not to have a second goal after Sidibe headed wide from six yards from Cresswell's excellent cross.

Souza had the better of the Stoke defence on 55 minutes as he leapt to meet McCann's corner but his effort was comfortable for Simonsen.

Fuller again showed his hit the ground under the lightest of touches on 61 minutes as he fell as he ran with Foster and Souza. Needless to say the striker made a swift recovery from his injury although he disgustingly spat in the direction of the Barnsley supporters on his way off the pitch and then had to be restrained by the Stoke physio and Fourth Official as he threatened fans in the West Stand Lower Tier while waiting to come back onto the pitch.

Barnsley had a lucky escape on 63 minutes as Lawrence rattled the cross bar with an outstanding free kick from 30 yards that had Muller reaching at thin air.

The Reds then smashed the woodwork themselves a minute later when Devaney broke well down the right and fizzed in a cross that Ryan Shawcross diverted against the upright and away.

Barnsley were back in front on 66 minutes as the Stoke defence crumbled under McCann's corner and Macken rose highest to power a header off Simonsen and into the back of the net.

Shawcross' late, late challenge left Macken in a heap on 74 minutes although the referee played on at least until John Eustace had upended Howard on the edge of the area. Howard took the free kick but planted the ball a foot wide of the post.

Parkin's introduction to Oakwell came on 76 minutes and he should have been booked within 60 seconds as his wild swing at Howard left the midfielder in a heap. Parkin got away with a warning.

The referee angered the Reds bench on 83 minutes as he failed to give a free kick when Macken was poleaxed by Shawcross only to award Stoke a foul seconds later for exactly the same offence at the other end. From the free kick Lawrence controversially netted the leveller from close range although the winger and Fuller could easily have been cautioned for their celebrations in front of the West Stand supporters.

Barnsley were rightly back in front just two minutes later when Simonson flapped at Devaney's cross under pressure from Kayode Odejayi. The ball bounced down and Macken was alert enough to prod it home from six yards out.

It was a frantic end as Foster was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon deep in stoppage time after upending Cresswell.

The referee did his best to hand Stoke a lifeline in the seventh minute stoppage time even though he had shown only four when he amazingly spotted a handball as Souza headed clear. Lawrence put the penalty into the back of the net.

The ref wasn't that bad today, Barnsley are just using that as an excuse for throwing away 3 points. The red card was fair, the bloke took Fuller out. Second yellow and he goes. Several times their defence went into rash challenges, they don't mention that do they?

We put a few tackles in today granted, but every time Fuller got near the ball they attempted to kick him. The only reason he didn't get badly injured was that he was too quick for them to catch him.

I actually thought it was a decent game and I'd give Barnsley a lot of credit for some of the football they played. However, they were responsible for some pretty cynical fouls, especially on Fuller, and they have a damned cheek for trying to paint Stoke as the badguys.

There's a bandwagon developing in the Championship at the moment, whereby teams kid themselves that they were bullied out of a game by thuggish Stoke. Long may it continue because deluded opponents are beatable opponents.

I agree 100% with Smudge.

On local radio (for barnsley that is) they were slagging us off as a bunch of thugs two hours BEFORE kick off! They simply gave themselves a bice easy ready made excuse. We gave as good as we got from a footballing point of view and on the cynical fouling they did lots more than us.

I do agree the ref gave some strange decisions I think ALL three penalties looked iffy but as for bullies I felt Barnsleys players were fouling lots more than we were and the red card (deserved imo) bears that out!

We traveled up early yesterday and tuned into radio Sheffield ( Barnsley's that wank they haven't even got their own radio station) There was two reporters commenting on the local games when it was Stoke's turn some of the bile they spouted was unbelievable, Stoke are an ugly direct team, I'd hate to be a Stoke supporter watching that every week.
