How do we pitch ourselves as a club to the premership brand ? Dull appear to be going for the "make us everyone's second team" line, Brazil are the fancy football dans. Should we go for the all out Millwall " no one likes us and we dont care" option or soften our team/fans image I'm interested because I think it does matter how we are thought of by players/ agents/ other fans and refs ! The prem is all about image, so what do you think?

no we should go for the team that has a big heart, also we should try and sell the city more, the history and tradition.

We're a bit like Karate Kid. We dont know what we're doing to start with and get our arses kicked, but with an off the wall coach we come good and everyone loves us when we stay up.

When you have a manager with the charisma of Tony Pulis it is very difficult to sell the club and it's image.
We have got a reputation of a long-ball, hoof-it, direct style with a management team who are devoid of any marketing instinct.
That's the way it is.... like it or lump it.

Like the Karate kid angle, but how do we explain that one to our 'ninja element' !!!!! They would love going for their 4th dan !

Pulis has openly admitted that he declines invitations from the likes of Sky for their Sunday morning slot and he has also stated that he wants to get away from football after the match at the weekend.
No problem with that in the lower leagues and even in the prem a few years ago .... but these days 50% of the Prem game is having your fizzog on the box and talking up yourself and your club... eg, Big Sam, Orange Phil, Kevin Blackwell, Gary Johnson, etc,etc
Notice that these are not guys from the big clubs, they take care of themselves.
Wether you agree with it or not, your first question in your original post has a lot of relevance in todays (crap) commercial world.

Years ago i used to help manage eddie izzard and to get him publicity we came up with the idea of not doing any TV interviews, the rest of the press went mad to put him in the papers etc.
it is about the whole image of Stoke City not just the manager. Sometimes your weakness can be turned into a strength, still need that marketing wizard?

Well it certainly hasn't worked with Tone has it?
Seriously, I think it is a very good topic that you have started.
I really do wonder if the combination of location, manager, style of play and lack of TV exposure does play it's part in the mind of your average, very rich, but very thick, top line footballer.

a lot of the problem with stoke city is that we are so unprofessional in so many ways the club is run, we are absolutely piss poor at marketing, no one at the club seems to talk to each other, staff that work at the club seem despondant, i don't know wether it is low morale or what, the club run properly should easily be able to sell itself, why is stoke one of the most hated clubs in the country, when the people of stoke on trent are some of the friendliest and most hospitable people in the country.

archies dad
i even worry that the brand might be damaged by our non comformist element and that 'the brand' might do something about getting us out of it, penalties, sendings off etc. Money talks. or on the other hand maybe they need a bad boy team.

Good point offthewall... trouble is we can't even do the "bad boy" team very good. Leon Cort? what's his claim to fame?

dorsetpotter what about this for a paradox (is that right) Having lived away from stoke both in the south and the north for years, i agree some of the friendliest people are from stoke, but i have also had to explain that i was not one of the nutters who alot of people think of when you say your a stokie !!!!

Hull have stolen the 'new boys' angle, looks like we have to be really really bad. how about banning away fans and a plastic pitch, it worked for Luton. Oh hold on?

Phil 'Orange' Brown played Sky Sports like a dream Saturday lunch time. He talked about Hull being the place to be, regeneration etc etc., players wanting to go there, play for a team in a city that is on the up, all with a fake tan and a smile. Sky had a five minute feature that focussed on the city that has waited 100+ years for a football in the top division, with clips of people with a sunny disposition smiling and waving. Joseph Goebels, Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda couldn't have done a better job of persuading neutrals to take Hull as their second team. We got a clip of Pulis saying how hard it is to sign the right players when you're unfashionable. The difference between the portrayal of the two clubs and cities was startling.

Skip,
saw that mate and thought exactly the same.
No matter what you think about Brown, the bloke has done a hell of a job and a neutral watching on Saturday wanting to put a bet on one of the two teams to stay up, would have done so on Hull without a pause. Felt he put over their city and club really, really well.

Exactly. Phil Brown wasn't interviewed purely about Hull's chances on the opening day, he was selling the club, he knew it and Sky knew it. We don't seem willing or able to play those games.

Sorry but how is this image going to help us? Are Hull going to sell a load of season tickets or shirts on the back of Brown's interview? Help them sign players?
If we're just talking about the newspaper's slagging us then i think we can manage without the marketing.

Probably, yes.
Hull and in particularly Brown are actively marketing the Club and the area.
Are we?

It doesn't do any harm for the media networks to smile when they say your name. You are as you are perceived in this game, Brian. Clough knew it.
p.s. it's exactly the same as how S-o-T has done a piss poor job of selling itself as the place to invest. There's something quite noble I suppose but you're not going to change the inward perception of Stoke without doing so.
