The team of 1963 was promoted from the old 2nd Div with just 53 points. It must have been the lowest points total ever to have won the Division by, and Stoke were given no chance of surviving the 1st Div as it was then, but survive we did. Dobing hit 16 goals with that old crock body, Violet hit 10 goals with that old crock body, McIlroy hit9 goals with that old crock body. The crowd carried those poor old souls on the crest of a wave, and achieved 17th place in Div 1. Now this old crock(me) as the same belief in todays team. I think that these no hopers Kitson, Fuller, Lawrence etc can defy all the odds(paddy power BIGOTS) The best advice I can give is to encourage them and believe we can and wil do it.

Sadly the opposition isn't quite as bad as it was in '63.

Wasn't aware Dobing was that old actually. He played in the '72 League Cup Final so what do you regard as old? On the other hand, the three players you name were of the highest quality at their peak and in fact, Dobing probably was at his peak then. The comparison is only valid because we were written off but ability came into it too and I think we're all worried about the lack of ability at the moment.

Jimmygscfc-Dobing was born 1st dec 1938 I am saying that he was part of the team which was Known as the Old Crocks. Read the book 101 Golden Greats although the players named were houseold names they were considered by the media to be past their sell buy date. Just how the media can be wrong.

Who says the opposition was bad in '63. As I recall the first game then back in the top flight was against Spurs (recent double winners -like Manure), whose team was filled with class. Notably the great Jimmy Greaves was man-marked out of the game by Eric Skeels and Stoke won 2-1 against the odds
