Move south, it's too grim up north, says Tory think tank news.scotsman.com/uk/Move-south-it3...grim.4383786.jpPublished Date: 13 August 2008 By Gerri Peev A LEADING Tory think tank is urging people from cities in the north of England to move south if they want a better life. Cities such as Liverpool are beyond revival and millions of their residents should move to London and the South-east instead, the Policy Exchange think tank claims today in a report. The conclusion will prove controversial and is untimely as the Tory leader, David Cameron, starts a tour of regional cities today to try to win over sceptical voters. Coastal cities such as Liverpool and Sunderland had "lost much of their raison d'être" with the decline of shipping and had "little prospect of offering their residents the standard of living to which they aspire," the report states. It was time to be "realistic about the ability of cities such as Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle to regenerate struggling neighbours, such as Liverpool, Bradford and Sunderland. "No-one is suggesting that residents should be forced to move, but we do argue that they should be told the reality of the position: regeneration, in the sense of convergence, will not happen, because it is not possible," the authors conclude. The university cities of Oxford and Cambridge were well placed to become economic power-houses, the report argues, like the industrial north in the past. The authors included Tim Leunig, a lecturer in economic history at the London School of Economics, who says: "The issue is clear: current regeneration policies are failing the very people they are supposed to be helping." And he added: "There is no evidence that the trend will be reversed without radical changes." what hope is there for stoke, if they think this way about the European City of Culture ?

Dave,
There's very little hope!
I don't undertsand it. There is so much pottential in Stoke, there really is.
We have extrmely good transport links into the city. (Just linsk intot he city centre needs inproving)
I believe we are in prime location for regeneration, we are probably one of, if not the least under -generated cities in the North West. There are nothing except for warehouse work for the young people to look forward to, No wonder the drop in college entrants and university enrtants are so low in thsi area. We like all other big cities have poor area such as bentilee, meir and the likes. But compare them to The moss sides af the world, we aren't doing too bad. All the councils moeny seems to be going to improve the lives of those on council estates...and dont get me wrong, why shouldnt they. But a Lidl and a new coral in Bentilee wont improve the city of Stoke
If theyw ant to do that they need to make the city centre more inviting, Festival Park on the edge of the city centre as so much mor epontential it alrady brings people in for the water world, make people want to stay longer and have other attractions around there such as an ice rink etc
The colleges need to be improved, so do the schools
But there is hope...
Stoke-on-Trent is probbaly at one of the most important changes in it's history. With the merger of the local high Schools (Which brings to the point why are Trentham High trying to stop this from happening) and the new shopping centre at the bsu station, and the new cnaal re-development...In 10-15 years this city could be one that we could be pround of...We just need to be able to sya good bye to the past and stop been so sentimental...So what if a few pubs need to be closed..it will be a lot benificial to the city in the future!

stoke has plenty of potential but whilst they allow skilled jobs to slip away and only replace them with unskilled jobs it will continue to slide .
the area suffers from a serious brain drain, there just aren't the right mix of jobs to keep all its bright and educated youngsters , and once gone few return . I know this just from looking at friends re-united . From Clayton high where i did my GCSE's its between a 1/3rd and a half that have moved more than 20 miles , from newcastle high where i started my high school education its more like 2/3rds that are gone . me included, though i would love to reurn it just isn't possible, even in my semi-skilled trade I couldn't earn 2/3rds what i earn without doing stupid hours, and there just isn't the right IT job to attract my wife to the area

Ubermesch, new college premises means nothing, the LSC has committed £12 billion over the next 5 years to regenerate/rebuild college buildings.
Including some in the South, which will cost a bit more because of the cashmere carpets, gold taps and priceless works of art on the walls

She had the opportunity to do her degree at Keele, but chose Brighton, partly because "Why would I want to stay in Stoke*, Dad, there's nothing to do?". Like it or not, judging by most of her mates with whom she was at school (Clayton, like you Dave), and College and who have gone to study elsewhere, this attitude is quite prevalent amongst aspirational young people of her generation. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/4tzqvp1fxEemag_TAXLJ.gif) This isn't just a North/South issue since places like Manchester and Leeds are seen as being more attractive than Stoke. * Even though she's never lived in Stoke having been brought up in N-u-L. The Media are calling it a tory think tank report, but it is not.
They are an independent bunch of idiots that the Conservative party commissioned on other matters (not the same people but the same company)as did Tony Blair in years gone by.
Don't believe everything you read.

Worked in London yesterday, in the west End. Got to within 2 miles of workplace in 3hours 20mins, then 1hour 30 mins to do the last 2 miles. Parked on a meter to unload the car...£4-80 for an hour...then went to Chinatown NCP...400yards away...almost an hour to get there...parked for 3hours 20 mins...£15-50...oh and the £8-00 Congestion Charge...Give me Hanley anyday!

ive lived in northamptonshire now for nearly 15 years, used to live in alsager as a small kid till the age of 4.
yes areas of stoke are shocking, middleport is bloody awful at the moment and areas of shelton make beirut look like kensington, but stokeon trent is going through a change, there is huge potential to redevelop successfully.
its not all that great down south, luton is one of the biggest shitholes you will ever come across, corby and northampton also leave a lot to be desired.
i love going up to stoke to see family and stay often. the people of the city are very genuine and you feel welcome, take a trip to london and you will see that most individuals look after themselves and themselves only. give me stoke anyday

When I was 18 I left this area as soon as I could. I've lived nearly half my life south of the M4 and yet I still loved coming back to visit N Staffs to visit. So much so I've come back to live here and I'm glad I did.

Just to add to my first comment - for a lot of young people, and not only young people, the fact that more often than not you have to go to Manchester or Birmingham etc. to see the bands, comedians you want to see is a disincentive to stay, or move, to North Staffs.
The rise of the BNP in Stoke, plus a general sense of intolerance towards people seen as "different" is also a big problem I think. Again, that isn't a North/South thing (if indeed such a divide really exists - we are, after all, in the West Midlands {supposedly}).

I know from personal experience that the graduate opportunities in Stoke-on-Trent and N-u-l are almost non-existent. This is aside from the fact that even if there were attractive opportunities available for ambitious young graduates, there is very little in the way of sparkling restaurants, clubs and venues to keep them excited in the area. I don't know if one breeds the other, but I think that unless exciting graduate positons are made availble in Stoke then all the existing regeneration work will soon stagnate once the initial government funding runs out.
