Mowbray: "We'll take it on the chin" Posted on: Sat 22 Dec 2007
TONY Mowbray has told his players they will have to take today's 3-1 defeat at promotion rivals Stoke on the chin.
But he has urged them to bounce back from the Britannia Stadium reverse, which saw them drop to second in the table, in the Boxing Day battle with Bristol City at The Hawthorns (ko 3pm).
In-form hitman Ricardo Fuller's hat-trick blasted City into a 67th-minute three-goal lead and sentenced the Baggies to their first defeat in six games on the road.
And, despite banging on the door for the majority of the second-half, Albion could only muster a Roman Bednar 72nd-minute consolation as they struggled to break down a stubborn Potters defence.
"In Ricardo Fuller they've got a hot striker who is in form and gave us a few problems today," said Mowbray.
"We played against a decent strikeforce and the quality they've got up front was evident.
"We probably didn't create enough in the first half and we let in some soft goals.
"I enjoyed watching our team for long spells in the second half and yet we didn't take the chances when they came along.
"I love football with a passion and I saw a football team trying to do the right thing.
"Sometimes you've got to give credit to the opposition for what they're good at.
"We tried to play some nice football and probe and maybe we didn't ask enough questions of their goalkeeper in the first half.
"We'll take it on the chin, move onto the next game and try and make sure we win it.
"That will be our target on Boxing Day in what will be a tough game but one we are looking forward to.
"Defeats are part and parcel of football.
"It's how you react to them and we've done pretty well in the past.
"We've lost 3-1 today but let's move on."
The Baggies boss took the bold move of throwing on 20-goal strike duo Kevin Phillips and Ishmael Miller, who got 45 minutes under his belt on his comeback from a month-long knee injury lay-off, for Chris Brunt and Filipe Teixeira at the break.
Martin Albrechtsen also returned after six weeks on the sidelines with a knee problem as he replaced Bostjan Cesar in the 69th minute.
And James Morrison was back on the bench after five weeks out with a similar injury.
"We've got some players that are coming back to fitness and striving for minutes on the pitch," Mowbray added.
"We gave them an opportunity and I thought we controlled the game in the second half.
"We scored one and created one or two other chances but it wasn't to be today.
"A few of them are at different stages of fitness but the minutes on the pitch will help.
"The bench looked strong and it had an impact on the game in the second-half."

He can take it on the chin...but he's still got to have that little pop at us, sigh!!! "I love football with a passion and I saw a football team trying to do the right thing."

As it happens, there's a little poem here for Mr Mowbray ... www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A30392651... sounds like his beer might already have turned into vinegar though!? ;0) ah (Baggies at home ... It's like having an additional Christmas Day!)

I thought West Brom looked a decent side personally - the movement and technical ability was there for all to see, and it is obvious to me how they are top.
Though, credit to Tony and the players, we stood firm and contended suitably with a barrage of attacks from WBA during the second half. It wasn't pretty, and WBA enjoyed more of the ball, though crucially failed to place the ball into the back of the net often enough, and were also guilty of trying to 'overplay' in my opinion. They didn't have the same endeavour or commitment as the Stoke side - epitomised by the 'throwing of bodies on the line'.
We've done well to secure the victory - however lets not get carried away. We can beat the likes of West Brom yes, but this was aided by their attacking nature and outlook on the game, which given our current squad, suits us down to the ground. The test of this team will be when teams inevitably come to the Brit with the aim of returning with a point. Then the teams ALL ROUND credentials will be tested. We need that extra little bit of creativity in order to unlock defences, similar to WBA do.
Anyway, lets enjoy a superb win and a magnificent performance from Ricardo, who is looking an absolute snip at 500k at the minute!
Goarrrrn Stoke!!!!

West Girly Albion aren't that good and there's a reason. There was lots of pretty passing it about around the halfway line and long balls from one side of the pitch to the other but there was no penetration whatsoever. Ultimately, they were weak and ineffective in attack, although credit really must go to our defence for their superb job of keeping them out.

"The Baggies boss took the bold move of throwing on 20-goal strike duo Kevin Phillips and Ishmael Miller" Oh dear how bold of them to chuck on only a 20 goal strike duo
