Stoke City are seeking to extend Stephen Wright's loan spell at the Brit until the end of the season.
But their chances of keeping Ryan Shawcross for the rest of the campaign remain in the dark as manager Tony Pulis waits to hear from Sir Alex Ferguson on the future of the young defender.
Wright has impressed Pulis after making 16 appearances since joining on loan from Sunderland at the start of the season.
"His loan is up at the end of the month," said Pulis, "and so it's one we've got to sort out.
"We will speak to Roy Keane up at Sunderland and see what can be done. As with Sir Alex and Ryan, the decision on Stephen is Roy's to begin with."
Wright hopes to recover from slight concussion in time to compete for his right-back slot against Championship leaders West Brom this weekend.
Shawcross remains Stoke's top priority after impressing during his first extended run in senior football.
Pulis has already made contact with Manchester United, but is now awaiting a response from Ferguson to learn whether his appeal has been successful.
Shawcross has already expressed his interest in remaining at the Brit to both Stoke and United.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway into the safety of the temporary seating that accommodated nearly 1,900 Stoke fans at Blackpool last Saturday.
Blackpool have been forced to suspend the sale of tickets for their next home match, against Coventry City, until the completion of a structural survey.
The investigation follows the appearance of a hole in the stand while Stoke fans were celebrating their club's second goal in the 3-2 win at Bloomfield Road.
Stoke fan and Sentinel columnist James Knowles was sat near the hole. He said: "I would guess the hole in the floor panelling was two foot by one foot and some 10 feet above the ground. A steward stood over it throughout the second half

re. Shawcross, is it only me that is sickened by the fact that we are begging for crumbs at Inspector Taggart's table?

What has Pulis seen in Wright? He's been decidedly average since he arrived. Caught out of position regularly and offering little going forward. It looks very much like Pulis sees him as a permanent signing come the summer - which is worrying news as he's done so little to back up this course of action. And, according to Coates' interview a few months back, he hasn't come cheap in terms of wage contribution either! the inference was we were shelling out at least what we were paying to Hoefkens. Seems a lot for someone who most fans would possibly have as 3rd choice RB?

"A steward stood over it throughout the second half"
A clever trick if you can do it.

What I suspect Pulis sees in Wright is an ex-premiership player. He seems to go starry eyed over anyone who has previous top-flight experience regardless of how badly they perform. None of the other players we have who have filled in a RB during Wrights numerous injuries and substitutions get pulled out of position as much as he does, his passing is woeful as is his lack of pace.
Considering our manager used to stand in the technical area and go purple in the face everytime Hoefkins put a foot out of place, its amazing that he has become so laissez fair about defensive responsibility this season.
Re-signing Wright would be a major mistake when we have Zac, Wilco and Delap who can all fill that position. TP should free up the wages and spend them elsewhere.

Wilkinson is much better than Wright. I was really impressed with him on Saturday-him and Cort were the best defenders on the pitch.

I have to agree bayern, I think Wilko is due a run in the right back role. Whenever called upon he has never let us down and I think with each game he plays he's becoming more confident and accomplished within the environment of first team football. He's definitely served his apprenticeship as a 23yr-old 'kiddie'!

I agree with the above, Wright is using up a loan slot we could better use elsewhere, say midfield. He can return to Sunderland for me

wright has had to play injured for most of his games but for a few of his games in which he has played fully fit he has looked impressive and better than anything we have got at right back, wilko gets done far post all the time
EUSTACE OUT

I've thought he has been very inconsistent and wouldn't be unhappy if he went back to Sunderland. But I don't see any problem with him "using up a loan slot". Cort and Pugh will soon sign permanently and that would leave only Zak and (possibly) Shawcross on loan so there is room for others if we need them without being concerned about Wright filling a slot.

He's one-paced, rarely gets forward and always seems to be on the verge of getting crocked again. Adds very little IMO and I'm surprised we're trying to extend his loan.

Being fast and running means nothing if you don't do anything with the ball when you have it though. Sinclair caused us few problems, he was too easily marginalised.

Typical stoke fans, always too quick to judge a player, he`s not 100% fit and done a good job when he`s been in the side, reminds me of some fans on here after pugh`s and cort`s debuts saying how wank they were...2 of the better players in the squad now

Yeah, typical Stoke fans, rushing to judge a player who's only in the fifth month of a five month loan spell.
If he isn't fit now, will he ever be? He's rarely been better than average, and as I said before, he's pretty slow and doesn't get forward enough.

I can't see what Wright gives us so far tbh, even Delap is better news.
