Former Stoke City goalkeeper Jimmy O'Neill has died at the age of 76 after suffering from emphysema and an aneurysm, it was announced this afternoon. The former Irish international goalkeeper was an ever-present between the posts in the Stoke team winning the Second Division title under Tony Waddington in 1962-63. Capped 17 times by his country, O'Neill kept 48 clean sheets in 149 appearances in all for Stoke between June 1960 and March 1964. His early career had seen him rise through the ranks at Everton before leaving in a £5,000 move to the Victoria Ground. After leaving Stoke, O'Neill moved on to Darlington and then to Port Vale to clock up 50 appearances under the managership of Sir Stanley Matthews. His widow Angela said today: "He has a lot of friends in the Potteries and we had Christmas cards from fans of both Stoke City and Port Vale. "He always had a lot of time for people in the Potteries and said they were lovely people. "Stoke were a team of players who had seen better days, but by goodness they did well." He also leaves four children and seven grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Friday at St Anne's RC Church in Ormskirk, starting at 9.30am. A Full tribute will appear in Tuesday's Sentinel. www.whydelilah.co.uk/news/4pm-update--City-s-t937155630.aspx

That's sad. He was our keeper when I started to go to watch Stoke regularly - good keeper and always had time for a chat with us kids if he met us on his way into the Vic
RIP Jimmy and condolences to all the family

That really is sad news. Jimmy was one of the foundation stones which led to our good times in the 70's. Waddo thought highly of him and rightly so. I saw his career through at Stoke and he served us well.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
I've modified my avatar as a mark of respect for Jimmy and his family.
RIP, Jimmy.

Sad news indeed!
Jimmy O'Neill was unique and totally recognizable in his flat cap.
Similar to what Fornside recalled about Jimmy, I remember standing behind the goal at the Stoke End and when the ball was at the other end he'd turn round and have a quick few words with us lads in response to a 'bit of banter' - usually about his cap.
RIP Jimmy and condolences to his family.

R.I.P. Jimmy. Didn't he score a goal at Villa or Bolton for us?

Forney,
He was the first keeper that I saw when I first started going to the Vic as well....
Mick,
you are right , he did set us up for the run in the 70's, Irvine followed by Farmer after Jimmy if I remember rightly....
RIP Jimmy lad,
best regards to family and friends

Jimmy was also 1st goalie I remember at Stoke. Was formidable in the promotion season back to Div 1 when our defence was the best in the league. Brilliant keeper rememeber him giving Tony Allen a bollocking on more than one occassion. RIP Jimmy.

Great goalie, Jimmie, especially with Allen and Asprey in front of him. A real gutsy, old fashioned goalie who wanted any ball inside his box. R.I.P. Jimmy, thanks for the memories. Another golden oldie gone.
