17/12/2007 - 4pm update: City's title-winning keeper dies
Former Stoke City goalkeeper Jimmy O'Neill has died at the age of 76 after suffering from emphysema and an aneurysm, it was announced this afternoon.
The former Irish international goalkeeper was an ever-present between the posts in the Stoke team winning the Second Division title under Tony Waddington in 1962-63.
Capped 17 times by his country, O'Neill kept 48 clean sheets in 149 appearances in all for Stoke between June 1960 and March 1964.
His early career had seen him rise through the ranks at Everton before leaving in a £5,000 move to the Victoria Ground.
After leaving Stoke, O'Neill moved on to Darlington and then to Port Vale to clock up 50 appearances under the managership of Sir Stanley Matthews.
His widow Angela said today: "He has a lot of friends in the Potteries and we had Christmas cards from fans of both Stoke City and Port Vale.
"He always had a lot of time for people in the Potteries and said they were lovely people.
"Stoke were a team of players who had seen better days, but by goodness they did well."
He also leaves four children and seven grandchildren.
His funeral will be held on Friday at St Anne's RC Church in Ormskirk, starting at 9.30am.
A full tribute will appear in Tuesday's Sentinel.
STOKE were still awaiting a return call from Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson this afternoon to discuss the future of loan star Ryan Shawcross.
City boss Tony Pulis is hopeful the Old Trafford supremo will agree to extend the 20-year-old centre-half's loan spell until the end of the season.
