Just to bring everything all under one thread.
You could tell looking at the line ups in the last test that we were buggered. Our batting stopped after Bell (Ambrose is shit and shouldn't be in the team, Flintoff is a damn good bowler but inconsistent with the bat and we simply cannot be relying on a bowler like Broad to dig us out of the mess that his supposed superiors have got us in) and our bowling attack was weak to say the least. I really and truly cannot understand why risk playing Pattinson when both Hoggard and Jones, proven International class, were waiting in the wings. It seems a lot of the time that the new coach wants to keep trying to move away from the 2005 team a fair point in the cases of Harmison and GilesThe picking of Pattinson as a whole is just baffling - barely been in this country 10 minutes, only a handful of games, couldn't get in his state side and he's 29. He didn't look anything special, did he? We should have finished off the First Test and didn't because our bowlers were hopeless and our solution was to drop a batsman and bring in another number 11 batsmen. Anderson did himself a lot of favours with his resilience yesterday and that he managed to last 5 times as long as Pietersen, but I'm afraid that compared to either Hoggard or Jones he just isn't good enough. Finally, Ambrose doesn't score anywhere near enough runs to justify his place in the side. A knock of 30 wouldn't have been enough to save Collingwood and nor should it be enough to stop Ambrose staying in place of Matt Prior.
Somehow, we managed to have a decent pool of players and pick a selection that are weak at both batting and bowling.

My team for Edgbaston:
Strauss Cook Vaughan Peitersen Bell Prior Flintoff Broad Anderson Sidebottom/Jones Panesar/Harmison
Prior has got to come back in now surely. Ambrose is no better than him behind the wickets, and is clearly out of his depth batting against the likes of Mills, Martin, Vettori, Southee and co, never mind Ntini, Steyn, Morkel and Kallis.
Flintoff obviously has to stay in the team, but cant lead an attack with just Jimmy Anderson for support. He needs someone like Sidebottom or Jones, someone with discipline that can put batsmen under pressure at the other end. Broad has earned his place in the team by being the most consistant batsman in the team! Says it all dosnt it! He can be used sparingly if he isnt on form with the ball in a 5 man attack, and if he is on form, then we all know the lads got talent.
Panesar just isnt good enough to play if the conditions dont suit him, he desperately needs more variation. This slot can then be used for Steve Harmison. Whatever people say about him, he is fast, he can intimidate batsmen like McKenzie, who cant just stand there and leave a ball that could be flying off in any direction. He takes wickets, and thats what we need, a wicket taker.
Id also take the time to explain to Vaughan, that you cant rely on the captaincy forever. Batsmen need to score runs, otherwise they're no longer batsmen, but deadweights pulling the team down. Get it sorted Vaughan.

Aaah, great mind eh The main problem with the captaincy is that there is no-one else that could take the role other than perhaps Collingwood, but hes been dropped for a reason, and it would be pointless dropping Vaughan for another batsman that aint scoring. Clearly Cook is a future England captain, but just look how it effected Greame Smith when he was made captain so young. It just looks like we'll have to persist with MV and hope he hits a bit of form very soon, becasuse we cant compete with the likes of SA, Aus, India with deadweights in the side
