They can't really win though can they?
Dither now and miss Capello, Lippi or Mourinho. Get slated for that. Then take a gamble on who is willing and available in, 5 months?

Perfectly fine to appoint Capello now. With any luck he'll have all the squad together almost immediately and give them a damn good talking to.

If he's right for it appoint him now. It'll take a long time to prepare for the forthcoming campaign and in the next nine months he could be in for a shock or two.

I actually think the FA have done pretty well with this.
They completely and utterly cocked up McClaren's appointment - they really did rush it, plus they fucked up communication-wise with two candidates that they wanted (Hiddink and Scolari), plus they basically left the whole decision down to one man.
They actually seem to have learned from those mistakes, taken their time (a bit), consulted a wide range of people within the game, and got the "putting the feelers out" part right too.
And we've wound up with a guy who, at club level at least, is world-class. As others have said, guys like Marcelo Lippi and Fabio Capello aren't going to wait around for ever.

So who would you appoint?
if you can name a single manager more qualified than Capello you will be doing well.

Potters22, are you really saying that you'd prefer us to appoint a new England manager in May and then give him just August to watch players in competitive games before our first World Cup qualifying match in September? It isn't like club management. A club manager appointed in the summer can usually afford a few matches at the start of the season to experiment. In a World Cup qualifying year the team needs to start producing the goods quickly - one or two bad results can ruin a campaign - as we have just seen this autumn - or have you forgotten so quickly? EDIT - He has just been confirmed in the job - good! ;D
