I did my CBT about a year ago, so been riding for a year, but I'm planning on getting a bigger bike soon, how many lessons is a reasonable amount considering I've been riding for a year(and I'm not too bad at it)

I did 2-3 lessons before my direct access test , but then i had done 20,000 miles in a year on my 125
i failed 1st time for not going fast enough ... failing to make adequate progress, after missing a national speedlimit sign hidden in a tree , had about 2 more lessons before passing 2nd time
go to a reputable bike training school and ask for an assessment lesson to see if you are ready for the test

Tut, Tut, Pembo I saw you on your Bike a few months ago and I would not have guessed you were faking it. ;D I passed mine after 8 lessons, I think I would have passed earlier but I waited for my instructor to book the test. What Dave says is interesting because even though I didn't fail on it but the examiner did say I was going a little slow on the 60mph country lane between Barleston and Trentham Golf club. I was doing 55mph and it was pissing it down. He said he would let me off because it was raining. They really want you to get up to speed quickly and stay on the limit. Make sure you look over shoulder (lifesaver) as they call it, everytime you speed up, slow down, or change direction and you will be fine. I forgot to mention if you have a 125, use the instuctors 500cc and go direct access. You don't want to be messing about on small bikes

I get restricted to 33bhp an all, but a little plaque claiming its been restricted will sort that. I think I'll do a couple of lessons, see how my instructor thinks I am beforew I do my test.

algor: I was doing 40mph on a clear dry single lane each way national speed limit, missed sign as it was in a tree on the junction as I joined the road , knew it wasn't 30 , but would never have lived it down if I had failed for going too fast , in a way ot was more amusing that I failed for going too slow , its not something I am usually accused of

Passed mine after 2 days of training when I was 18 which generally consisted of flogging the little NS125 around the Manifold valley . . . although I had already been riding off road bikes for 6 years by this time - so my throttle, clutch and brake control were rather good! Left the examiner behind on several occasions - at roundabout saw the slightest gap and I was gone! Flogged it down the country lane route he took me even taking wide lines into bends - hesitation and going slow are actually some of the most common reason people fail. Probably the most enjoyable 'exam' I've ever done! The examiner was friendly and actually praised my riding at the end of the test.
