FOR RYAN SIGNATURE Stoke chairman Peter Coates is vowing to pull out all the stops to try to keep Ryan Shawcross at the Britannia Stadium in the wake of reported interest from Premiership strugglers Derby County. Stoke are keen to retain the Manchester United youngster for the remainder of the season, meaning they would have to renegotiate a loan deal presently due to expire in a few weeks. However, their bigger concern is a January bid from the Premier League ... with near neighbours Derby reported to be ready to offer Old Trafford £1m for his services. But Coates insisted today: "We are on the case and doing all we reasonably can to keep Ryan here. "He's clearly done well for us and is a good, young prospect we would like to keep. But he's also a Manchester United player and we have to respect that fact." Shawcross, the Championship player-of-the-month for October, is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer, meaning United may be willing to cash in on him when the transfer window reopens. In the meantime, though, it is understood they are in no hurry to take him back to Old Trafford where he remains well down the defensive pecking order ... even though Sir Alex Ferguson was at the Brit on September 22 for Stoke's game against Plymouth to see his young charge in action. Stoke will be hoping the 20-year-old defender is reluctant to join a relegation dogfight at Derby, or sit in the United reserves, when he can continue his progress in a potential promotion push at the Britannia instead. He certainly indicated that would be his preferred course of action last week when he said: "In the next couple of weeks I've got to sit down with the gaffer and Sir Alex, but I'd like to stay." However, Derby boss Paul Jewell is known to be determined on big changes at Pride Park come next month in a desperate attempt to save his new club from the drop. Shawcross returns to the starting line-up at Blackpool on Saturday after missing his first match last weekend through suspension. === Is it Griff that keeps them updated with our players? Fook off Derby

just said on sky sports that jewell has received offers for steve howard as well. i agree with the 'fuck off derby' comment though,as i said on another thread, what would be better for ryan, being at a club where the tema are winning and doing well, or being at derby and getting hammered week in week out and having your confidence shot to pieces?

As much as I like Ryan I think that Higgingbotham is a better defender and look how he gets torn apart in the prem! It would be a bad move for him to go to a struggling side in the prem

1 million ???
Is that it??? for someone of his age and potential ??
A. Would Man utd sell him for that when he could just stay on loan and still be a man utd player whilst gaining experience
B. I'd like to think that we could easily match that 1million and that Stoke would be a better prospect. Derby WILL go down this year and its looking like they'll break all records for lowest points and goals conceeded. Would Ryan want to go to them and be a part of relegation and have all those records against his name?
For all the greed in football these days i would say that ryan is pretty sensible and it'll be key for Stoke to do well over xmas.....If we are still in the hunt for automatic promotion come january then i cant see many players wanting to leave.
My only concern is that Megson will come in and strip the club in january, He's a big fan of Fuller and Shawcross and Bolton is a lot better prospect than Derby

Man Utd wont sell Ryan, he is a brilliant defender for their future teams. If they were in a position to sell, what do you think would be a maximum amount a team would pay for him? Age and potential if nurtured properly i would not be surprised at bids going up to and over 2 million

As much as i like Shawcross there is absolutely no way that he would even get in the Manure squad. Pique has stepped up into the squad to challenge for the first team aswell so thats another player ahead of him in the pecking order. Although, as far as im concerned, thats all good news for us as he is arguably the best defender in the Champ and could defo do a job for us in the prem next season. If he and Cort manage to form a decent partnership we would have the best defence in the league, add to that Whelan/Quashie with Salif in the middle of the park and we have every chance of automatic promotion.

He's a strong, quick (at this level), young central defender who can also score goals. To me £1 million is unrealistically low. Is he English? If so then in the current dumbass climate then you'd have to be looking at twice that...

He's out of contract at the end of the season, that will reduce the fee a bit.
irishstokie is spot on about him not getting in the United team. Pique is above him in the pecking order and no doubt they'll sign more players better than Ryan.

this could very well tell us how serious coates is about getting to the premiership £1million for basically one of the best young english centre back prospects this country has is nothing and we need get a deal done before someone other than Derby click on

If Shawcross went to Derby he would get 15+ premiership games & if he does well (even if Derby dont) then there is a better chance of another prem side signing him in June. Exposure @ the highest level is something we cant offer.
If they come down & no-one buys him then @ worst he is back in the CCC on @ least as good wages as @ Stoke & with a better chance of promotion (given parachute payments e.t.c.) than Stoke will have next season once Coates starts his cutbacks.
The only way he would be better off signing for Stoke is if we go up & thats a big risk for the player.
The sensible option for the player is to see out his contract & choose his move in the summer. If Utd offer him a contract it would go to a tribunal anyway (as he is well under 24).
Cant see Stoke outbidding Derby in Jan so best chance of him staying is an extension to his loan.

put yourself in his position. on loan from manure, he is playing very well in a top 6 championship team, in a division that is so wide open, with a few more signings come jan stoke could be serious promotion contenders. derby come in jan offering him 10-12k a week, they are shit, beaten comprehensively each week and like others say his confidence will plummet.
what do you do? go back to utd for reserve games and hope they offer you a new deal, move to derby for the prem experience or stay at stoke and try and push for promotion, bearing in mind they have just signed diao.
unless you are a greedy tw@t, then it seems like a no brainer to me, you stay at stoke, keeping your foot in the door at utd, especially if you keep playing well, then if utd dont offer you a contract, stoke will probably sign you or some bigger club.
