I was in a second hand shop down Stoke the other day and the woman behind the counter said she was bored. I suggested she turn the radio on. She told me if the radio was on they would get fined as they don't have a licence to play music. What a bollox law. Thats insane. Is that right? Or could she have been lying?

I'm pretty sure you can play 'background' music without the need for a PEL?

It was a strange thing to say. Perhaps she was just starting a rumour.

Tis true sir. There was a chap on central news last month that had been either fined or told to get a licence for his car repair shop. I am pretty sure there was a taxi driver also had the same bollockin.

you have to have two! A PPL licence and a PRS licence...and they are fookin expensive! Depends on what premises you run, you may also need a Premise Licence!
You have to have one to play music to people whilst they are on hold too. Wouldn't mind but most people pay shed loads of money for a licence and then play shit!
We pay a fair few £,000's for ours each year....its crazy.

It's true mate every business in the country is being haressed by these swines now, we have had several letter's from them in the past month. 1 of my customers admited having commercial radio on in the factory and received a back dated bill for 10 grand. I know a good few companies that have now turned the radios off! It will be the death of local radio staions as pretty much all of there listeners are at work. No listeners = No advertising income. This is the result of people downloading music for free (I have no axe to grind with this) but I guess the music companies have to make there money somehow.

We have a PRS licence at work to cover our call holding music. However I believe you don't need one if you only play music that has expired as far as copyright is concened e.g over 100 years old. That's why so there are many companies that use classical music or Greensleeves as their call holding tunes.

Its such a bollocks law though , the wording of it means that any working driver who has the radio on or plays music that other people can hear is breaking the law, well fuck them, my window is down, and if its a good track everyone around me can hear it too cos my vans got a bloody loud stereo

You see this is what the police do when we have such a well run, crime-free country, they have nothing better to do.
