I am pretty sure the vehicle needs to be insured by the owner so that your insurance is valid,

I am pretty sure the vehicle needs to be insured by the owner so that your insurance is valid, quite correct, that stops your wife having a fleet of unisured vintage astons and your fully comp on a 1993 ford fiesta driving them

Check the wording but I think you are insured to drive any vehicle you are licenced to drive. I.e car, Bike or van.

Also check your insurance schedule because a lot of companies are now only insuring you third party to drive someone elses vehicle even though you have fully comp for your own !!

The first thing to do is check your Certificate of Motor Insurance (not a covernote).
If it's not on there then that stops you straightway. The wording will be something along the lines of "The Policyholder may drive any motor car not belonging....." etc.
However as someone stated the cover is limited to the minimum cover required by the Road Traffic Act which is known as Third Party Only.
The vehicle doesn't have to be insured although it cannot be owned and registered in your name.
In answer to your question, if your thinking of driving a van under this I would suggest you check the wording carefully. The usual wording used by most insurance companies state, a Private Motor Car. Therefore if you were driving a van then you wouldn't be covered.

It's not incorrect at all.
It is a common misconception that the vehicle has to be insured by someone else. If you read the wording on the certificate of insurance and most policy documents there is no mention that the vehicle has to be insured.
