Derby linked to Shawcross in The Mirror... Not surprising really?

Derby will buy any player who performs in the Championship. What they forget is that they're now in the Prem...

I'd be amazed if Shawcross was not drawing attention after his performances (and goals) this season.
Somehow though, I don't think any offer Derby County might make right now would interest him. Wonder why..........?

I know we are biased and live in hope but, unless the money they offer is ridiculous, why would he sign for Derby, a club which will probably be relegated, when all he has to do is wait until the end of the season and pick from a wide range of clubs in next year's Prem - even us, hopefully!
EDIT - I see us Old Newcastillians speak with one voice on this matter!

How much will it be Shawcross's decision though? It all depends on what Man Utd have planned for him. If Derby come in with a good enough offer they may take the money and run rather than let his contract run out.

He doesn't HAVE to sign for anyone he doesn't want to and he doesn't sound to me as if he is the type of lad to let himself be bullied.

I understand what you are saying but I am sure that Sir Alex can be pretty convincing! If he tells Shawcross that Derby would be a good move can you see him arguing back because he loves Stoke so much?

Can you think of an argument that would make Derby seem a good move?

How about "you'll get more money playing for us"?

given the choice the vast majority of players would go to Derby as he will get games in the prem. If he does well from Jan to May another prem club would be more likely to buy him.
once relegated Derby will have @ worst an equal chance of promotion as Stoke.
Unless we can somehow offer Man Utd more cash than other clubs our chances are slim.

I'm with Fornside on this one (and not just cos I'm an ON too!)
I can't see Shawcross going to Derby for any amount of wages right now as a short-term gain. He'd be crazy.
He knows that he can stay at Stoke and attract attention from much bigger fish and make his decison at the end of the season.

But isn't Fergusson a fan of Jewell - he sent him a case of wine when he went on his sabbatical and he certainly made quite a fuss of Jewell when they met up last week. I suspect he would advise Shawcross that even though Derby will be relegated they have the manager in place to get them straight back up, the money and the fan base. I would hate Shawcross to go but being honest they are a better bet than us!

Are Derby really starting to get on anyone else's nerves. I know football is almost totally a commodities market these days but bloody hell.
Griffin - you look a complete dick every week, lunging in after the ball and forward went by hours ago. You might have loads of money but everyone will remember you as a knob.

How do we know that Fergie won't be keeping him? Having said that, if he did retain him, he may well feel it beneficial to throw him into the deep end at Derby to see how he copes

It seems a simple choice to me. Does Shawcross go to a club that will definitely be in The Championship next season or does he stay with a club that has a decent chance of being in The Prem next season?

Spot on, OS If he's got any sense he'll come here every time. Seriously. Look at the favours it's done to Griff going to Derby.

We'd have the advantage of familiarity - but that's about all. And defenders always get a chance to shine in Pulis XIs.
But they've got a better ground, better crowds, and the ability to pay bigger wages.
It's 99% certain they'll be back down next season. But in the still pretty unlikely event of us going up , would the prospect of enduring a Derby-like season with us in the Prem be particularly enticing to a defender?
Derby, meanwhile, will be a very good C'ship team next season under a good manager, allowing his reputation to rise further.
Let's hope Derby don't put their money where their mouths are, so he has no decision to make!

If Fergie is good mates with Jewell, he might like to see young Ryan in the Derby defence for the rest of the premiership season.
This would allow him to see if he was up to the task and how he would handle himself against quicker and better opponents and see how he copes pressure wise.
It would make sense from that persepective, however I hope we can at least keep him for the rest of the season

and maybe being in a team getting hammered every week might destroy the lads confidence, at least with us he is tasting victories
