What would your team be now? Would you go for a little more attacking on the flanks as Salif offers some defensive cover in the midfield? Will it take pressure off Eustace to be the main midfielder? Will it allow Delap to push on a little? What do we all reckon?

1-5-3-1 sweeper system... ;D
Sorry SGS, couldn't resist it a cheap dig at TP...
Seriously, though, he could make us a completely different proposition if he plays a diamond 4-4-2 with Salif holding and Mama sitting in behind Cress and Fuller...

Mama behind cressy could work. Diao offers security. However, if we could get whelan in then our midfield look a totally different proposition.

I reckon it's a given that Salif will sit as the deeper of a mid-field two. Unfortunately I cannot see us dropping Delap, even if his only use is his freakish ability to chuck the ball further than most humans can kick it. So we are left with either Delap as an attacking middle man, or Delap moved to one of the flanks. Personally I'd drop him faster than I'd send Wright back to Sunderland, but I guess he will feature somewhere - full back maybe?
my team would be
Zac Court Shawcross Dicko
Lawro Diao Eustace Pugh
Fuller Cresser
Edited following change of heart regarding Zac - Bang to rights SGS - if only we had!

I'd go with that side as well. Delap's throw ins are such a weapon that it's worth sticking him at full back and seeing how he does. Wright is only adequate there, so we're not really losing much by trying it. Pugh seems better at left back than midfield, but until we sign a proper left winger, I'd rather have him there and move Cresswell into his proper position. I do like Mama, but his goalscoring record is worse than ever.

why do people keep suggesting Zak at right back???
he is a very good central defender but a bit pants when at right back.
also pugh is no left midfielder but a very good left back

With Shawxross(!) and Diao in the side I doubt whether we'll concede another goal.
Houston it's looking good...!

Zak throws everything into defending, he defends like his life depends on it at times which I for one really appreciate. I agree he is better in the centre but I would have him there over Wright any time. Though the Delap shout is a good one.

It's an interesting dilemma this one, quite clearly signing Salif is great news for us and makes us much stronger. I'm just not sure who we can play with him in midfield though due to Salif's positional play. Last year we had the ever willing Darel to tear arse all over the pitch but I can't see any of our current lot filling that role. I think to bring out the best of Diao we need to sign a headless chicken who can run all day but play a pass and get a few goals Any ideas that come in under £4-5M

I'd go with
Simmo Wright Shawcross Cort Pugh Lawrence Eustace Diao Cresswell Fuller Sidibe
With good cover in the form of Zakuani, Parkin, Phillips, Delap and Hoult
Pretty solid 16.

---------------- Simmo ------------
Delap ----- Cort ----- Shawcross ----- Pugh
Lawrence ----- Diao ----- Eustace-----Sidibe
-------- Fuller -------Cresswell--------
Subs: Parkin, Phillips, Wilko, Zakuani, Hoult
That seems to give us options to either push forward if need be (Beast for SJE and 4-2-4 anyone?!) or shut up shop with the old 8 at the back trick ;-)
The idea of Delap at LB is growing on me. Thought he was excellent on Sunday and he has a killer weapon that those in the box could/should make better use of...

It would be Delap at right back ??? Pugh at left back but I know what your saying. Infact the options that Salif gives are in that holding role allows swift change from attack to defense depending on what we need from the game.

diao and lenny in the centre would in my opinion be superb, liam has the engine of russell with far more quaity and menace. diao protects the back four superbly. perfect midfield partnership. would be the championships keane and scholes.

I think things could change quite considerably before January is out. The ideal middle of the park pairing of players we have at the club at present would be Salif and Liam, leaving aside who would take Liam's role on the right.
Liam is Darel Russell but with more skill and more goal threat - he could bomb on with the security of Salif sitting in behind him. Cressie has to start up front with Ricardo (we cannot afford to play a non-scoring forward any longer), so that leaves both wide places up for grabs (Danny has to play left back in our best XI and I'd stick Rory at right back, as he could do no worse than Wright and his prodigious throws do offer an attacking weapon that TP finds hard to resist).

do you suppose TP is sat behind his desk with a mound of crumpled up paper around him while he too struggles to find the best formation?
which by the way is a good thing in my book as it creates competition for places.

My team.
Simmo.
Zakuani/Wright Cort Shawcross Dickinson
Lawrence Diao Pugh Cresswell Mama Fuller
Pugh's performance in the midfield on sunday was a revelation. He could be the answer to our attacking midfielder. Diao to sit in front of the back four breaking up things and starting moves from deep. Cresswell is a third forward as is Lawrence. Both are predators and will contribute goals when they get in the middle.
Some will say that Mama should be dropped but I reckon his linkup play is vital to our team.

Well the Mama flicking on long balls will be less of a factor because Diao should be able to hold and use the ball if a move breaks down. This should provide variation to our attacking play.

I think that through TP's stubbornness to field injured/unfit players out of position, we'll see Salif get half an hour in goal against Blackpool. Lets just hope that Salif can push on, and command a place in front of the back eight. Failing that, TP could always resort to attaching a ball and chain to his leg, and try him up front?
