It was 50 years ago today that this tortured musical soul passed but fortunately he left us 3 albums as his legacy. Pink moon imo has to be one of the best albums ever to be recorded and I was introduced to his music by a friend during the summer of 1974 when as a 17 year old I suffered with depression but his music helped me through some dark times.

I chose the name Riverman as a tribute to Nick Drake. Have to agree that of the three albums Pink Moon is the best due to it capturing the real essence of the man. The other two albums, though brilliant in their own way, relied more on production and backing musicians. Having said that Northern Sky from Bryter Layter is my favourite song of his. Pretty unappreciated when he was alive which affected him greatly and ultimately led to his death. Since then though he's become a massive influence to so many artists. A real sad loss to music but a wonderful legacy.

Xmas 1970 my sister gave me the Island "Nice Enough To Eat" sampler with Tull,Crimsom,Traffic,Free ect but the track that got me was "Time has told me." The following week I got a copy of "Five leaves left" (had no idea what the title referenced.) and have followed his career ever since. If you want to really understand him there is a great documentary online that talks about his relationship with the other great artist of the time John Martyn. Great connection that Riverman I had'nt spotted it.

Despite all the completely self indulgent string arrangements and mindless unnecessary muso parts that strangled those wonderful songs, they somehow managed to (just about) shine through. Boyd killed those records. Somewhere in Island's vaults, lay the original masters to those records and I've always wondered, why on earth they haven't rereleased them, minus all the Boyd production guff?

Someone introduced me to Nick Drake 25 years ago, just handed me a cassette tape and said "you should like The Mallard, judging by your other tastes"
In retrospect I don't know what they meant exactly as Nick is unlike anything else Ive ever heard , but I kind of know what they meant. Perhaps it was my velvet jacket.
To this day, every time I see him I thank him for the Drake
Since then I've made around 15-20 people aware of his music, all hugely appreciate it. Someone I hadn't seen in 20 years -the first thing she said to me in the pub was Thank you a lot for ND. Still surprising how little his music is known. Pink Moon was used on a VW commercial a few years back, and the last season (to date) of Slow Horses earlier this year played out with one of his tracks. Brad Pitt is a big fan and has done a documentary about him, but still he remains a great secret that you must set out to discover for yourself
I put Riverman on for a professional guitarist and he made me put it in 8 times as he couldn't get his head around how he was playing it
All hail Nick Drake, proof positive that however unappreciated you believe your own talents to be, someone somewhere someday will appreciate you for who you are

His sister Gabrielle is a well known and talented TV actress and is still working I think. Probably best known as the moon base commander on UFO circa 1970.

There have been a few biographies of Nick Drake which are ok but it's safe to say that all of them pale into insignificance next to Richard Morton Jack's 'The Life'.
It's a fantastic and exhaustive exploration of the entirety of his short life and an especially clear and rather sad depiction of his change from a happy young man into a deeply mentally ill one.
Genuinely excellent.
