A shocker pal. 100 odd dead so far. Must be absolute carnage.
Problem with big parts of Spain i guess is the lack of grass and vegetation so the sandy earth gets ripped up easily with torrential storms causing chaos. Very sad to see how bad this ongoing incident is 🙏

Very sad. Visited there about 10 years ago and it’s a beautiful city. Definitely. I remember though that the big parkland/walkway that runs through the centre was as a result of diverting the natural river flow due to a catastrophic flood previously.

Yep it was caused by a phenomenon in Spain called “Gota Fría” which causes these crazy rain storms and flooding. Think Valencia diverted the river in the 50s after multiple floods over the years and one specifically catastrophic one causing loads of damage

Think Valencia diverted the river in the 50s after multiple floods over the years and one specifically catastrophic one causing loads of damage Late 60's when it was completed. I like the city, been back twice since we played there. I had friends running the VAlencia half marathon on Sunday, said it rained just about all of it, they came back on Monday so were lucky. I presume the Valencia marathon in 4 weeks time will be cancelled

It’s orate cos climate change doesn’t exist. They had a bad flood in 1957 and 75 floods in the seven centuries prior to that if you read up on it mate.

It’s orate cos climate change doesn’t exist. Heavy rains this time of the year are not uncommon in Mid and southern Spain. Cold air from the Atlantic meets warmer wetter air from the Mediterranean and it rises over higher ground spilling its water over dry land. Apparently water temperature in the Med only needs to be less than one degree higher than average to cause this devastation. As it happens the water temperature this year is higher than average.

I see the King of Spain has taken a lot of grief from the people, but it’s the government who have a lot to answer for. It seems they didn’t issue the text weather alert until well into the evening, when the flooding had already caused a great deal of damage.
Because of this, people were caught by surprise inside their cars, garages, shops and ground floors, trapped and not able to get out. So it’s a massive act of negligence from the authorities.
The locals were then more or less abandoned by the government, who didn’t send help until almost 4 days after the disaster.
Currently there are more than 2.500 people missing and more than 200 confirmed deaths. I’ll be surprised if the final number will be way higher than that.

There's a few of these posts knocking around which show the reason for the disaster in an alternative light.

There's a few of these posts knocking around which show the reason for the disaster in an alternative light. Amazing isn't it, most normal people know large dams were built by humans and are there to hold water to supply the population with water when needed ... There's some that will twist that though, and then some gullible ones who will believe, no research, where are all these dams located? Dams built by beavers and smaller swales by humans to hold back smaller amounts of water are totally different. 76% of those dams in the tweet were low level weirs etc that stopped migratory fish which had dropped by 93% That's also an out of date report, France were the leaders in obstacle removals over the last 2 years.

This thread reminds me of the It's ok not be ok thread.
Lots of climate change sceptics, net zero critics, green agenda attackers and Thunberg haters suddenly acquiring some sympathy for the victims of one of the repeatedly predicted consequences of the very thing they spend the rest of their time ridiculing.
In many ways it's similar to the amount of time some posters spend on the mental health thread desperately trying to come afross as a great guy (many of the same characters, ironically) while continuing to make snide remarks on lots of other threads.
It's almost like "if I act all sympathetic now about something I'll continue to be an arse about elsewhere, that's ok" 😏

I’m not a climate change sceptic but there is a lot more to this disaster than "climate change".

I was a bit shocked that we hadn't seen film of helicopters flying overhead with relief supplies and army/navy units in boats etc the day and days after, the government seemed very slow to react and respond. I and probably most other ex forces guys on here did disaster relief training as part of sea work up and deployment training.

Apparently water temperature in the Med only needs to be less than one degree higher than average to cause this devastation. As it happens the water temperature this year is higher than average. As it is around most of the world, when I was in Chicago a few weeks ago, Lake Michigan was 2'C higher than normal, we've seen most sea temperatures higher than normal this year, and they are getting warmer earlier in the year, it's as if the predictions on temperatures rising with climate change don't exist

I’m not a climate change sceptic but there is a lot more to this disaster than "climate change". It’s very nuanced, climate change exists of course and then there is what I call the “human induced” climate change which is what everyone is talking about. But you are right there is a lot more to this than just the human climate change side - extreme weather in this region has been happening for a very long time and this isn’t the first disaster in the area, hence why river diversions were needed in the end decades ago. (The old riverbed is a park i think now?) Has this disaster happened purely because of human induced climate change? I’d say not. It’s likely a contributing factor for sure in an area known for annual extremes of the cold front that hits. Take the climate of 100 years ago and apply it to this event - it still would have happened, with some arguments over its severity perhaps. What seems to be clear is the Spanish government have a lot to answer for in their reaction and communications to the people in the area.
