Going back over the years there must have been referees we enjoyed watching? I’ll start with a couple from the 70s and 80s for you older ones.

The guy who fell over when Di Canio pushed him That was brilliant. The way he went down - should have sent himself off for simulation. The Monday night match had Ian Wright scoring for West Ham. His celebration was raising a red card and Ruddock came and pushed him over. Not a fan of the choreographed celebration but that was a beauty. Also liked Powell beating his chest when we scored against Nathan Jones. |

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Howard Webb. Not sure if anyone else remembers this, but I remember in the early Prem days we played Blackburn, and Diouf (the one famous for his spitting) was placing the ball for a corner in front of the South Stand and it was outside the quandrant. We were all yelling at Webb to get him to notice, which he did and trotted over to make Diouf place the ball correctly, before giving the South Stand a big grin as he jogged back into position.
I do also miss Celebrity Ref Mike Dean, he was always good for entertainment, as long as he wasn't reffing us.

She was actually quite suprised at my excited reaction when she told me. We were talking sports and she mentioned that her uncle Pierluigi is a retired "soccer" ref in Italy. They have the same last name but I thought I must have misheard, so I was like "PIERLUIGI COLLINA?! OMG he's a legend, probably the best ref ever". She's not a footie fan, and Italian footie refs aren't very well known over here and there's me going full on fan girl about her beloved uncle. It was nice for her to see how genuinely respected and loved he is by supporters across the world. |

I think you're right, which is a real shame as it did end up spoiling the game somewhat. |

But familiarity breeds contempt. In Italy a lot of fans are disparaging about him because at some point he'll have made costly decisions against them. I like Collina because he symbolises an era of football. When CH4 started showing Italian football onto the big internationals he did. He was a rarity.... a charismatic ref 😆 |

Had a chequered past with us before the Auto-windscreens Final I was led to believe. Never did us any harm that day though. Sure there was a moment some refs could have awarded Bristol City a peno but he diligently waved the appeals away aswell 😉🤣 Always liked Uriah Rennie after that Taggart v Wise incident. & he made a staring role on 'Marvellous' as well don't forget. Remember there was a famous moment in a match Rennie was reffing (non Stoke). At half time the stadium announcer said "I'd like to welcome the teams back out onto the pitch for the second half of the Uriah Rennie Show" !! Whilst it gave everyone in the ground a laugh don't think it went down well with the powers that be 😬😉😁 |

I’ve been watching Stoke City for over 50 years and I can honestly say I’ve never ENJOYED a referee. Not once.
I did quite enjoy Sian Massey in that cup tie at Crawley but she was the linesman not the referee.
