Why were there black armbands yesterday?
And before kickoff all the players looked like they were gathering for a minute's silence and then got waved away.
And was the applause at 74 mins connected?

We were wondering the same and yes noticed that round the centre circle. The wife was asking what it was for

74 was for a chap who passed last week, a long serving supporter. Saw it on FB.
Fairly sure the armbands were for George Baldock

Understood the applause on 74 minutes but the black armbands was a bit of a mystery. The players looked to go & gather around the centre circle pre kick off and the ref appeared to make a signal to the touch line before signalling to the players to just crack on!
So all still bit of a mystery 🤔

Was also thinking the same yesterday. Being an ‘out of towner’ I’d assumed that something was mentioned in The Sentinel or whatever to explain who it was for, though clearly not.
Would it be asking too much for the Club to put a message on the screens pre-match so that fans can pay appropriate respect as needed?

Apologies if you are referring to the black arm bands, however without meaning to sound extremely disrespectful, the club honour the past lives if the ones we have lost at New Year each season. I think if they started acknowledging minutes applauses on a certain minute it would devalue the New Year memorial, and potentially set a precedent which over time would not get the proper reception from fans.

The thread title is Black armbands yesterday so of course I’m referring to them at the match on Saturday. I’m well aware of the annual tribute to lost Stokies and I think it’s one of the best things the Club does each year. What I was trying to say, apparently not very clearly, was that I thought when the players wear black armbands to a game - and possibly look for a minute’s silence/applause, as it looked like they were considering pre-match when they were all gathering round the centre circle - is that the Club could put up a quick message on the screen explaining why armbands were being worn and perhaps some brief detail of the person(s) being mourned.

Yep agree, like yourself, Callas & couple of other Stoke fans noticed the black Armbands on Saturday & the Ref calling the players to do an circle tribute. The mystery is to why it was? Nothing significant was happening at any of the other grounds around the country? I was expecting an announcement (as the club usually do) but again nothing materialised?

I agree, I do find it odd there was no mention of reason for Black Arm bands or on the club website.

Me and my lad were trying to figure it out - but Norwich were wearing them, although they were shite and only about half an inch deep so couldn't easily be seen.

Was it something to do with the death of Lord Housley? Strange that there was no mention on the club website or the big screen. The players were clearly expecting a minutes silence.

Hi All. My Name is Drew and I am the son-in-law of Jeff Lea, a lifelong supporter of, and contributor to Stoke. Jeff passed away on 25th Sep and you may have noticed a tribute to him at half time on the big screen. It came up after the birthdays and mascots. We asked for it to be shown. This isn’t usually done, but I believe the club bent the rules as Jeff has been such a dedicated supporter and has always sponsored a player shirt and made other financial contributions. We also noticed the black armbands, but didn’t THINK they were for him, but it is possible I suppose. I wasn’t aware of the clapping at 74 mins and don’t know why that number would be significant for Jeff. Anyway, it was a great day, and emotional for Jeff’s wife and son who came for the first time with out him.

The clapping on 74 mins was for Derek Whitmore a lifelong fan, saw it on stoke loud and proud.

I noticed the armbands and what appeared to be preparation for a tribute before kick-off. I presumed it was for either Lord Ousley or George Baldock, but I guess we'll never know. Maybe they ran out of time?
The 'applause on x minutes' seems to be a feature in almost every game now. I almost never know who it's for, and most of the time, neither do any of the chaps who sit around me. They clap along anyway like trained seals. Perhaps I should too, just to be polite.

Perhaps just work a black armband into the kit and save the confusion?

Perhaps just work a black armband into the kit and save the confusion? I'd still be confused, but yes, it would save time for whoever it is that has to sort the armbands out every week (and it does seem to be almost every week). It's not something I get worked-up over, but the significance of these acts of tribute has been diluted by their ubiquity.

Great band.
