The legend that is Dudley Kernick didn't seem too impressed by him in his book.
Mind you he spent most of the book bitching about everyone he could.

I suppose the only thing that can be said of Geoff is that he played at a time when footballers didn’t earn a fortune and his income in retirement would have needed fees from speaking engagements, etc. Very true. Unlike today’s elite level players, he had to work to earn a living for the rest of his life after football.

The king of beers.

They still earned a great deal more than the average person. Hurst is one of the bitterest people re the modern game. He once picked himself in a greatest 11 team. You'd think he was beyond the ability of other players ever listening to him. He was an ok player who had his moment in the sun

I’ve just seen a list of the highest 30 goalscorers in the top division of English football. Jimmy Greaves is miles out in front but of the others, two players scored some of their goals as Stoke players. This thread gives a clue to the identity of one of them but who is the other? Big John?

It is someone with over 200 1st Division (or now Premier League) goals, which I think probably makes it David Herd.

I’m afraid not. This player was a Scottish international that Waddo signed towards the end of his goal scoring career.

I heard Norman Wisdom once attended a charity do and the fee he charged them was greater than the amount the charity raised. If people do something for charity they should only receive expenses, not a fee. We hired Stan Boardman at the Brit, twice actually amongst others...some of you may have been there. Denis Law was on also. Stan gave most of the 2k back Jack Charlton the c### wanted hotel and taxi to Birmingham airport paying after his fee and refused to sign two shirts from TOFFS for auction unless he got a cut In the 1990s I attended lots of Sportsmans Dinners that were raising funds for Kidderminster Harriers. I knew the organisers. When Geoff Hurst was the main speaker I was told he charged £600 which at the time was a competitive fee. The only 2 sportsman they could never afford were Jack Charlton & Geoff Boycott who were quoted at I believe £2-3K. Most boring speaker I saw - Graham Taylor ( & he couldn’t handle hecklers😁).

Anyway, to all the London/SE based Stokies, it’s an opportunity to meet two Stoke City Legends from the 70’s and an era when Stoke City were at their very best. Geof Hurst contributed plenty of quality, class & goals to that team as well as scoring a hatrick in the 1966 World Cup Final (just in case anyone needs reminding!) and of course is the only surviving member of that famous England team. TC was one of the best players to ever wear the red & white stripes of our great club, scoring the opening goal in our 1972 League cup triumph as well as scoring our first ever goal in a European Cup Competition. I am fortunate to see TC quite often as he lives in the same town as myself.Lovely bloke.

In retirement from the game he opened a pub and then became later an insurance salesman. Nothing like Beckman!
