This may be of interest to Stokies of a certain vintage, residing in The South/South East. On 6 November Sir Geoff Hurst (on his “Farewell Tour”) and TC are very special luncheon guests at the spectacular Folkestone harbourside Rocksalt restaurant. Hosted by Ian Stafford of The Sporting Club. A miniature bronze statue of Geoff (signed by him) will be unveiled and auctioned raising funding for Cure Leukaemia Charity. If you are interested in learning more/attending do check out: www.rocksaltfolkestone.co.uk/pdfs/rocksalt_event_geoff-hurst_final-farewell-tour.pdf. Do inform Rocksalt that you are a fan of Stoke (other supporters will be there).

Is he charging for the unveiling like he tried to do the the Matthews statue? Did the guy who made the statue do it for free? I know a bloke who does a lot of compere work for Sportsmans Dinners/Golf days etc in Thailand. It is not his main job, he does it part-time. He is always being asked if he will do it for free because it is for charity. He always says 'no'. I have no issue with Geoff Hurst wanting to be paid something (no idea what he wanted) for his time. Didn't Kevin Keegan do it for free or am I mixing up my statues?

Anyway, to all the London/SE based Stokies, it’s an opportunity to meet two Stoke City Legends from the 70’s and an era when Stoke City were at their very best. Geof Hurst contributed plenty of quality, class & goals to that team as well as scoring a hatrick in the 1966 World Cup Final (just in case anyone needs reminding!) and of course is the only surviving member of that famous England team. TC was one of the best players to ever wear the red & white stripes of our great club, scoring the opening goal in our 1972 League cup triumph as well as scoring our first ever goal in a European Cup Competition.

If people do something for charity they should only receive expenses, not a fee.

It is a lovely place and £140 is good value for a meal with this form of attendance. Think our bill was about £100 each for meal & drinks. Not a great room for speech making as it is long & thin with many tables outside to look over the harbour. Looks beautiful with the tide in, but a soggy grey mess with old boats on their side when the tide is out. Geoff Hurst is not a money grabber, but will be under the control of a marketing agency who will take liberties We all know TC is good value for his company and laughter

Went Folkstone in March this year, was impressed. Seems like a place that's managed to reinvent itself which a lot of coastal towns struggle with.

I worked for a local county council in the 1990s and we hired Stephen Lewis and asked him to come along in his Blakey from 'On The Buses' persona to promote a campiagn to help foster children. For some reason we had acquired or had access to a double decker bus with the promotional campaign decorated on both sides.
He turned up very meek and mild with a suitcase and I picked him up in a car at Stoke Station and he was very pleasant and polite He stepped off the London train and no -one recognised him. We had a bite to eat in the local café before we started and no-one batted an eyelid
As I was paying the bill, he took out a small 'Hitler/Chaplin' stick on tash from his waistcoat ticket pocket and put in on, and instantly went into character, threatening to "get Butler", waving his arms and chatting up the old ladies and so forth. The place was alive within seconds with laughter and we were mobbed on the way out. Everyone knew him - Bear in mind that by this time, OTB hadn't been on the air for 20 years. This was around 11.15am -he stayed in character all day, non stop avowing to "get" his nemesis, the aforementioned Butler and made lots of strange moaning guttural noises while swaying side to side with mouth open. We did wonders in raising awareness of the need for foster children and he wouldn't take a penny.
He was still 'Butlering' and shaking his fist from the car window as we drove off back to the station. As soon as we rounded the corner, he took off the tash and reverted to Stephen. He asked in a quite voice "was that alright?". He was completely exhausted.
Complete gent, and we would have had him back every year although by this time he was around 90, and the day's hi-jinx had certainly taken its toll on him

I’ve just seen a list of the highest 30 goalscorers in the top division of English football. Jimmy Greaves is miles out in front but of the others, two players scored some of their goals as Stoke players.
This thread gives a clue to the identity of one of them but who is the other?

Is he charging for the unveiling like he tried to do the the Matthews statue? I have no idea of the reimbursement arrangements, if any, but Geoff Hurst's oldest daughter Claire died in 2010 aged 46 from Leukemia so it's quite possible this is a Charity that has a resonance with Hurst although he is noted to be fond of the pound note. As some have noted England Legend absolutely, West Ham Legend certainly, Stoke City Legend?

No But he did score 30 goals in just over 100 games, decent and he was sometimes played in an attacking role rather than out and out number 9 His 3 highest league finishes we're all with Stoke

When does a lunch become a luncheon?

Post by march4 on Oct 17, 2024 8:26:52 GMT
I suppose the only thing that can be said of Geoff is that he played at a time when footballers didn’t earn a fortune and his income in retirement would have needed fees from speaking engagements, etc.

When does a lunch become a luncheon? I think when it transitions from a midday refuelling to an event. A luncheon is typically x10 the cost of lunch.
