I honestly think we should in some way whilst he’s still alive!
Sounds absolutely baffling but Rudge came to Stoke a couple of years after our relegation to Division 2, and in my humble opinion, was pivotal in a lot of our signings, which ultimately ended up with us getting out of that division at the third attempt, and ultimately, us ending up with the glory and riches of the Prem.
Yes he’s publicly known as being the main man at the unwashed where he spent 17 years, but we can’t forget his contribution during 14 years here! And in utter shithousery, it’s a massive middle finger towards burslem!

Was it really 14 years?
It's hard to deny that we were on a consistent upwards trend while he was here. You feel that a slightly more up-to-date version of him would have been really beneficial to managers like Jones or Schumacher.

Yes, strange to think when he was at the Vale we used to sing 'He's bald, he's bent, his arse if up for rent, Johnny Rudge, Johnny Rudge' For sure he is bald but I'm not certain his arse was ever 'up for rent'? It would seem unlikely. When he joined us, while no one knew exactly what he did, my sense if he was force for good for Stoke City.

The fact he joined us sort of indicates his arse was, sort of, up for rent. I often wondered if he did it out of spite! We could put a massive arse on the back of the Boothen pointing towards Boslem with a light in the center flashing SSTL in morse code!

Think we need an honour board a bit like Wimbledon in reception area not only for managers who served for 5 years or more but coaches or players that committed large chunks of there career to Stoke as a thank-you

Lots of Stoke fans and supporters groups supported and put cash into his statue fund at the Vale - thats where he should and is honoured.
I went to one of the supporters evenings with John raising funds for his statue with Simon Lowe, he was in great form, and has lots of great memories of his time at Stoke, but mainly spoke of his time in opposition during the 'derby days' of the 90s/00s and the progress 'little old Vale' made. They were great times for that club.
He is Vale through and through though, and I think Vale Park is a fitting place for his recognition.
There are many a Stoke hero who deserve something first - historical figures like Frank Soo, Tony Waddington, Denis Smith. Modern figures like Lou Macari, Tony Pulis. Many of the 1972 squad. Some of the 2008 promotion squad. So many more that supporters could fully get on board with over a Director of Football.

Can we just take that statue from Vale Park and put it in an office at the Bet 365 for 14 years?

He picked up a wage didn't he.... No doubt more than he was on at Vale, and for doing less than he did at Vale!!!
He's been honoured enough I'd say!!!

I saw John Rudge in The Roebuck in Leek in August this year. Looking his age bless him.

Rudgie is a Vale man through and through and rightfully deserves a statue for what he did for them. Being at Stoke was just a wage earner for him. Let things be.

I like to think I did a real good job for my company when I was working, creating wealth and employment for quite a few. Doubt I’ll be getting a statue though 😄

No, he was a voiceless faceless member of the backroom staff, I can't honestly think of a single thing that I could make a positive comment about him during his time here. If I could sum up his time here with 1 word it would be beige. Gouranga.

Agree with all this 👏🏻 One things for sure though, for a lad from the old gold and black part of the midlands, old South Staffordshire as it used to be known, Stoke-On-Trent & North Staffordshire, Potteries football has definitely benefited from JR's dedication to football & the local area following his playing career ending. He'll definitely be known as more Port Vale than Stoke City due to being front and centre of things at Vale Park & a more behind the scenes/upstairs type of role with ourselves. But he definitely deserves the credit & recognition for his work to both Potteries Football Clubs over a large period of time, & in a unique way, John Rudge has definitely etched himself in both clubs web of history throughout the years.
