I've heard so many mixed stories about it. The most recent one was that he really didn't want to leave but we basically forced him out because we were struggling to raise our share of money for the stadium and we couldn't turn it down. Who knows what the truth is? I suspect the different versions come from different people with different vested interests in peddling their version of events. Your story sounds the most plausible. We were poor payers in those days and even if we'd just made him our highest paid player by a long way, I suspect recently relegated from the Premier League QPR could still have comfortably beaten what we were paying him. Sheron didn’t want to leave. Thorne did. Yeah Id heard that Sheron was forced out to cover the shortfall on the new ground?

Thorne was a keen to leave as Kavanagh Kavanagh had been trying to force a move to Wimbledon for a while Kav was happy at Stoke and wanted to leave after we basically screwed him over a new contract which was a hefty pay cut to force him out as we needed to sell. At that point he was happy to leave and a move to Wimbledon (hard to believe they were a premier league club at that time) was very likely. It fell through, a few other clubs wanted him but Cardiff gave us the highest fee. He absolutely didn’t want to go there Where did you hear that from? I've heard that version before but there's just so many contrasting opinions and versions of events floating around. The only consistent one seems to be that Thorne was very happy to leave and jumped at the opportunity, contrary to how his departure was portrayed at the time.

They signed Prior, Whalley, Campbell and more all on the basis that they'd go up. The general consensus was that Kavanagh wanted to play at a higher level than clubs who were particularly interested , Wimbledon showed interest but was never really that realistic . I know the other Irish lads didn't like him at all, particularly Clarke who turned down a move to Sheff U around the same time

To be fair I think players in a club related interview isn't going to say .. I really wanted to go. He certainly did had a lot of time for us but money was too good to turn down. We didn't need to sell him and turned down a very big offer for him. Have seen that Duck interview before and basically says the polite thing . Kavanagh came out with some nonsense re ambition and having a Celt bond with the Welsh.

Sheron told Moxey that he couldn't give his all knowing the QPR deal was on the table He didn’t! I'll take Moxeys and Wayne's word especially Wayne over anyones as was them he told , Rob also. So yes, he did. Told me about 3/4 days before Sheron left that he said exactly that. Moxey actually mentioned it in his Sentinel or Radio Stoke interview also saying how disappointed he was by his comments The same folk who told me he was signing the Friday before he did with Scott going the other way as MON wanted Scott as knew him from his Wycombe days , not the Macari genius move some claimed. Norwich offered us Sheron as we said we'd consider selling Scott when we found a replacement. I think those involved with his actual contract and signing would know to be fair. I think was the same day they showed me the original plans for the stadium to choose our hospitality with the horrible multi coloured seats before Britannia were on board .

The shaun wright Phillips one was a hell of a game. The vitriol aimed at swp after delap got sent off was only matched by the almighty mental when beattie scored that salmon like header. To this day the I still believe the crowd won stoke those 3 points cos citeh looked shit scared. Remember fans singing "we only need ten men" to wind them up even more.

David Speedie at the Vic .. Think he threw the ball at a ballboy The ball went out for a throw in, on the Boothen Paddock closest to the Boothen End. Speedie came over (to take it?) and a young lad in the paddock at the front threw it back a bit sharply at Speedie. Speedie caught it around his midriff and immediately threw it back into the boy (his face?) with the kind of power that would spark out an adult. I remember a guy being held back, and how it didn’t end up in court I don’t know, a child had been assaulted by an adult. Contrast that prick with Big John Ritchie….clearing a ball he booted it hard into the Butler Street Paddock and hit a young lad in the face. Accidental of course but the poor lad was concussed and taken to hospital where next day he received a visit from Big John and a couple of other players.

The infamous Birmingham riot on 29th Feb 1992. Lou Macari was as tough as they come as a player and manager but underneath that exterior even he must have feared for his safety on that day. The abuse from the blues fans that day was non stop and was serious hatred on another level. I've never felt so on edge at a match in all my life.

I don't want to go all "my dad is bigger than your dad" on this but Jez Moxey was a serial liar from the Boris Johnson school of truth telling. Jez Moxey showed me Mike Sheron's hand written transfer request where it said he would no longer be able to give his all for Stoke City following QPR's offer. Mike Sheron did not write that letter. It was a complete fabrication on the part of Jez Moxey to sell our star player, to fund the stadium move and to prevent the outrage that was sure to follow were the truth known.

The man that attacked a 60 plus year old taxi driver. I don't know how anybody could like the little shit. Strange that Gascoigne is so well loved yet the likes of Greenwood are footballing lepers and you bring that up . Didn't he injured Wise's wife or gf seem to remember , not that what he did was ok. He was prosecuted, the driver wasn't.

Am talking Wayne who told me originaLly not Moxey in a meeting. He helped Sheron with his move to the area. Never heard of a written transfer request but he wanted to go to QPR which was surprising as the main reason he joined us was to be nearer to home as was pointed out to him . The money was too big to turn down . We originally turned down the offer that was accepted for him so makes no sense You don't build a stadium without finances in place. We appointed certain people on board for obviously reasons and approved their design over the alternative one which I personally preferred, more like Huddersfield but looking back made the right choice as little or no room for expansion although was only going to be one winner. We were negotiating a lucrative sponsor for the time as well when Sheron left although wasn't Britannia

He didn't to throw it he belted it as hard as he could in anger at the refs whistle going against him It hit a little lad, 10 maybe or younger,in the face and his dad tried had to be restrained from going on the pitch to deal with Speedie Think police came over? Speedie did look genuinely contrite to be fair, would like to think he and Albion apologised in person after but don't know Something like that anyway Night match, might have been an Autoglass game? Low key anyway and then crowd went nuts it was deffo a night match. Can remember that incident clearly,he was lucky the paddock didn't pull him in.I thought they were going to at one point.

Dennis Wise was a horrible little cunt. When taggart had him around the throat I thought he was gonna kill him. Uriah Rennie just smiled as they kicked off. I quite liked Wise. One of those players who in general had the Harry Arter effect. Only his own fans could really love him Can remember him getting dogs abuse when he was taking a corner at the boothen end and ended up getting a clap in the end by taking the Mick back stopping at the last second as he was taking the corner and laughing ,was quite funny I thought lol

What caused Taggart to throttle him?
