Not sure about this. Looks like a few Malaysian betting syndicates might have been celebrating after that went in. Looked dodgy as hell to me.

That's possibly the worst goalkeeping error I've ever seen.
It's the kid of take I'd expect an average under 7 keeper to make comfortably.
The ball doesn't spin, change direction, anything...bizarre. Only thing that could have caused it is that he's got his balance wrong and put a bit too much weight on his left side when moving across.

Absolute howler from Meslier 😆 i think its just one of those totally inexplicable errors. And judging by his face after the event with the cameras zoomed in on him for a long time after I don't think there was anything dodgy that went on. He looked genuinely bewildered.
Watching it back on the replays though you just can't fathom how its happened. Just a total brain fart I guess. Dunno

Absolutely nothing dubious at all
He looked like he was trying to do the take and go to ground to kill the game and got ahead of himself and never set his feet properly. He completely took his eye off the ball

Tough job being a keeper. If a player totally misses the ball almost anywhere else on the pitch it goes virtually unnoticed.

A bit of the Butlands about him.

Pompey’s Will Norris will have been watching that and studying it profusely so he can make sure he makes the same error.

It’s hard to make out from the angles but the Leeds cb is claiming it took a freak bounce in front of the keeper. I can’t imagine he’s lying to save the keeper’s embarrassment as he should have had no way of knowing at the time that the camera angles aren’t showing the full picture.
It’s still a huge mistake regardless as you still expect a keeper under that little pressure to be far enough from the ball/sharp enough to react to an unpredictable bounce, but maybe the reality is much closer to terrible luck than a terrible error?

There does seem to be a weird bounce on it, it bounces a lot lower than you’d expect, not sure whether the balls moved to either side though.
Still should save it.

The ball never bounced as high as was expected, and did a small jink to the left. Coupled with the 'keeper continually moving to his left, (as mentioned earlier, he never planted his feet), they were moving in opposite directions. One of those things. Unfortunately, his, one-of-those-things, cost his team 2 points. ...bummer.

Didn't they have a camera behind the goal. Would probably see something better.

It's the brain not catching up with what happened.
It skims the defenders head which changes the balls direction.
What he should have done is go and claim it but he doesn't and decides to let the ball bounce. He is then panicking about the man coming in to his right and has totally taken his eyes off the situation.
Before he knows it he's misplaced himself and the ball then skids through a bit and that's that.
Awful keeping. You are always taught to meet the ball before it bounces where you can.

I know the feeling. Many moons ago I was the hockey goalie for our Longton High boys team and we were playing a friendly with a team from Thistley Hough. We were not surprisingly winning 5:0 and the game was almost over when my captain instructed me to let them get a goal. Not being any great shakes in the acting department I wondered how the fuck I was going to do that. One of theirs took a weak shot that was coming straight at me when the ball hit one of our team and ricocheted off into the top corner. Never stood a chance.

It all seems a bit Mark Prudhoe-esque.. I liked Prudhoe, he was a good keeper for us, but occasionally dropped a clanger like this one here...

Seen a few comments online suggesting the ball hit something, possibly a bit of a broken off sprinkler, which changed the bounce of the ball. From the standard camera angle it looks like terrible keeping.

Pitched on on a good length heading for middle stump but the spin on the ball saw it beat the bat and just nick off stump.
Nothing suspicious to see here.

We have seen far worse than that though have we not?
Only seen it a few times but looks like it has taken a weird bounce and actually gone to the side of him, so not through his legs as we have seen umpteen times before with other keepers

Leeds fans were saying in the build up that the one player they’d want from us is the keeper because Meslier has a habit of doing stupid mistakes to drop points. I never thought he’d do something as bad as he did on Friday night though. He tried to be clever and was thinking of laying down on the ball before catching it. What he should have done was jump and caught it, then go down to the ground with it. Glad he didn’t though! My step son who’s a Leeds fan has shown me a photo with Leeds keeper laughing with the Sunderland manager I mean wtf would not be happy with that Le Bris & Meslier know each other from Le Bris’ coaching days I think so they’re friendly with each other. Still doesn’t help the fact he’s laughing about it though.
