You can't get the fitness required in the gym. The club need to bring in a couple of the local ex-SAS lads twice a week and show them what stamina is all about. Two days a week traversing Pen-y-Fan with 20 kg in their bergens would soon give them the stamina they need. OS.

I know you're saying that tongue in cheek, but the upcoming international break has to be used as a mini pre season to get those who aren't away working on their stamina.

Two days a week traversing Pen-y-Fan with 20 kg in their bergens would soon give them the stamina they need. OS. Mental stamina is most definitely an issue, arguably even more than fitness. And that can be improved by having a squad of players who know precisely what is expected of them, how they are expected to execute it, week in week out. Oh, and before anyone thinks that this is easy - the goal is to win football matches - it clearly isn't that straight forward at all, particularly when team formations, tactics and whatnot are now absolutely crucial. You longer beat teams by being fitter, you beat teams by being smarter. And we've not been smart enough for years. If any of you are fit enough to do so, try running at full tilt for a three mile run at a strong pace without a fixed end point. Your mind won't let you do it. If on the other hand, you are instructed to follow a certain route and where the two and half mile point is you can go for it and get yourself home in your best time. Stoke City not knowing what it wants from its players means we keep on shifting from one foot to the other, run like a bat out of hell one minute, but then other players have been allowed to amble around. If say, a player was told prior that they would be expected to exert X amount of energy, and will be replaced on sixty minutes, then they'd be fine. But if you are told to exert more energy sooner than you know that your body can not sustain for ninety minutes, then you manage that energy, making you less effective in your role. It all stems from the cloudiest of thinking from the Board of Directors, who should be working with recruitment and manager/head coach, not just buying in players who they think they will be good enough for us, or are available, or whatever. Now we've got John Coates who frankly, doesn't know how to run a football club and John Walters who some people would run a mile in their quickest time to avoid. I hope to goodness they've got this latest decision right. The whole thing is utterly maddening.

How do we keep producing about the most unfit team in the league? They ran for about 10 minutes and then looked absolutely fucked. How do we get it so spectacularly wrong? So consistently. Which is more nonsense attention seeking How do we keep producing about the most unfit team in the league? Back that up. You obviously know so much about the fitness levels of all the teams in the league so enlighten us with the facts...

Don't know if we're the worst, but we've consistently only managed 1/2 of a game for this entire time since relegation. Rarely do we put two full halves together.

Doesn’t that mean the other team only manage half a game too. I think our problem is when we do have that good half we just don’t take enough chances. How many times have we been on top for 45 minutes but only shown 1 goal for it - we need to be far more clinical

That actually would be a good strategy if we can develop "clinicality". Storm out, score 2 or 3 goals in the first half, then block the road the rest of the way.

We look bloody unfit and have done what seems like a long time. I understand different coaches require different things but we always seem to be behind the curve of what the coaches style of play requires.

As said above psychology will play a big part in anyone's ability to keep going. Seems to me that belief is at issue with our team and has been for significant amounts of each season for a long time now.

Great post Skip and although my own contribution was a little tongue in cheek, there was a serious side to it. I brought up the matter of the local SAS lads for three reasons: to pass selection for The Regiment they first need mental strength allied with courage; then they need stamina, and finally a certain amount of athleticism. They also need to be intelligent. I don't expect all our players to have all those attributes but they should have a certain amount of each to make the grade. OS.

Our second half performances for years would suggest fitness and mental strength are significant issues

Other players leave our side for another and start and play full games instantly. There’s no “he’s not fit he needs to get up to fitness for the next few months” I think a large part of it is desire to want keep going and keep the intensity when it does get hard. I think that’s where we’re fragile. I also don’t think we have the leaders on the pitch to bollock players who have taken the foot off or started to switch off.

I have been convinced that we weren't as fit as we should be for the past several years, but dammit - you're bloody right. They go off somewhere else and instantly are fit enough to play a full game/contribute and in many cases even play better than they did here. They even suddenly demonstrate the mental stamina as well. This message board can be nothing but a flaming argument at times, but more often than not, good discussion points can sometimes help to, at least partially, unravel "mysteries." Great point.
