Odd one, but hoping the experts on here will know. Wife’s sisters boyfriend reckons that all the first football clubs were financed by factory owner types for the good of the workers. I’ve had a dig around and can’t find any evidence for this. Anyone know the answer?

This was based on true events apparently and worth a watch if still on Netflix: It was a game for posh fuckers and then new money got involved from the mills/ factories spawning quite a few of the northern teams. They couldn't pay players but essentially got round it by giving them relatively stupid wages to work in the factories but not doing a great deal.

That was a policy that continued for many years (at a lower level). I have a friend, now 95, who was a very good centre forward in his youth, playing regularly for the RAF during his National Service. His first job after leaving the RAF was for a "works" football team. He was recruited to play football with a weekday job that was not expected to interfere with his football to pay his wages. Financially that arrangement was more attractive than playing in say the old 3rd Division (North or South) and was certainly a lot more secure in the case of injury.
