Was it worth putting less into other signings to get a stronger backup fullback? 🤔
I'm happy to gamble on Junior and Bocat. We're trying a youth strategy and I think it looks promising.

Still peddling this bollocks after being told you're wrong? Screams agenda to me. (Stevens played 37 games in his last 2 seasons at Sheff Utd) Not sure what it is I am peddling to be honest, or when I was told I was wrong by his highness(although I normally am wrong with most things) - very rarely reply or start a thread. Obviously think I have something against Stevens from the quote, just think we can probably do better, we had a few Sheff U fans on here saying he had been a fantastic player for them and a favourite, but he had gone past his sell by date and was struggling for them in his last few yeas there and not a regular starter. Given his age and form I thought it was a strange one for us to have him as our main focus in that position at the start of last year and, for me, hardly reeks of ambition. Also given his age and how much time he was injured last year, I thought it was not worth us extending his contract and maybe trying to improve - no agenda, just an opinion. You obviously like him and so that is fair enough Your longer argument is fair, and I even somewhat agree, it's was just that saying he's hardly played for 2 years is dead wrong. True, he only played 12 games in 2022-23 due to injury, but that is something we'd have to manage. He did play 22 games for us last season, and I'd expect him to play around that this season as well Bocat has impressed me in the last two games, and if he keeps it up it'll make sense to keep playing him as he is the long term option. But when Stevens is fit, we have a great defender, and a passable attacking fullback. It would be a waste of money to use it on yet another LB. This season at least. I agree we need another LB in addition to Stevens as cover for his eventual injuries, but Bocat will probably be sufficient as a first choice. As third choice we'd ideally also have a 17-18 y.o. in the U21s waiting for his chance, but for now Gooch/Thompson will have to do. Then it'll be Schueys job to protect them when they play at LB.
I will say though, that we' should be playing our best players regardless of age, whether they're 17 or 37. Stevens is probably a cheaper option than a hefty fee or sign-on in addition to wages. 34 y.o.'s seldom get big money when signing new contracts.

Would have liked to have seen a bit of a statement signing at right-back personally. To be fair we were touting Hoever and for whatever reason it did not come off, just have a sneaking feeling we might regret not having a plan B in that position and I think I am very much on my own regarding us lacking quality and depth, again, across the back 4/5, re us ever moving forward. Yes, if the youngsters all come good and all stay fit then maybe we will see an improvement - big ask for me, but I guess something has to come off for us at some point. Plenty to be optimistic in front of that back four though and possibly 3 players capable of getting into double figures, so who needs a defence

We'll have to come back to this discussion in a few months to see whether the gamble was worth it. I totally get your point but am happy with where we've invested. There's always January 👍
