I think my favourite line from Huge Ones after a goal was "yes indeedy, I'll have a slice of that!"

I think my favourite line from Huge Ones after a goal was "yes indeedy, I'll have a slice of that!" .....and the occasional 30 yard screamer into the top corner was met with " WOW - THATS A CRACKER" RIP Hugh Johns

He had a golden voice and a great take on commentary, that's for sure. RIP Sir.

John's used to refer to players by their nickname. Chippy Brady. Dixie Deehan. Often when a goal was scored he'd say 'There it is'. Brian Moore used to say 'Aaaaand it's in there'. David Coleman's 1-0 is the famousest Or the best one, Nigel Johnson's "and the ball's in the back of the net!"

For those that are interested ‘Brian Moore saved our Sundays’ is a great book about ITVs regional football coverage in the 70s. The fact that it’s from Pitch Publishing is another reason to buy too. Worth a look on Amazon.

The media were very friendly towards Stoke back then. My theory is Waddo used to keep them well supplied with booze afterwards! 🙂

They all seemed to have genuine character back then - Gerald Sindstat here in the NW , Martin Tyler in the NE, Brian Moore in London , Gerry Harrison in E.Angla even Fred Dinenage (How) on the South Coast. Sad to say I struggle to name even one commentator on MOD nowadays. Sinstadt had a soft spot for us as lived in the area seem to remember. Didn't he do the infamous Oldham game in the snow ? One of my first games Hugh Johns often got players names wrong. His best commentary I think was that game v Poland, was it 73 when England battered them but only drew? I remember watching highlights a few years back- he does called the ref Lato though who was the great Polish midfielder . Crazy game

As a regular Star Soccer watcher in the 70’s, I used to love Hugh John’s’ commentaries, and like others have said, he did seem to have a bit of a soft spot for Stoke. He certainly seemed chuffed when we scored but probably most Midlands football fans thought the same as he always seemed to be enthusiastic when the Midlands teams scored!

Yep he seemed to be a fan of John Marsh in particular Good username👍
