They all seemed to have genuine character back then - Gerald Sindstat here in the NW , Martin Tyler in the NE, Brian Moore in London , Gerry Harrison in E.Angla even Fred Dinenage (How) on the South Coast. Sad to say I struggle to name even one commentator on MOD nowadays.

The commentator many of us grew up with, nice tribute here Hugh Johns. The "other sides" commentator for the 1966 World Cup. Kenneth Wolstenholme "Some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over..it is now" Hugh Johns "That's it" Wonder why no one remembers Hugh Johns commentary. As a kid I wasn't allowed to stay up and watch MOTD, so my weekly TV football fix was Hugh Johns on Star Soccer so he was the voice of football to me. It didn't do any harm that he seemed to like the way that that Waddo's teams played or that he loved Jimmy and Huddy.

Im sure I remember Tyler ‘doing his apprenticeship ‘ up there.

In the early 70s I was a young cashier at a local Bank when he called in on a Friday to cash a cheque. He told me that Port Vale were scheduled to be on Star Soccer that weekend. It never happened as the game had to be cancelled due to fog and I can’t ever remember them ever being on Star Soccer after that.
A true unassuming gentleman.

Salmons....Greenhoff....YES....what a baeutiful goal
1975 The quagmire that was the Baseball Ground
Perfect
...and if the cameras had been at Meadow Lane in 79, then you can guarantee a Hugh Johns commentary would have legendary status easily

That scene showing him climbing the precarious gantry to commentate on an Endsleigh League game was a bit of an eye opener. The glamour of football.

I remember as a kid thinking it was a bit unfair that if you lived in Granadaland or ATV there were about a zillion clubs to be covered but if you lived in Angla or Tyne Tees your club was on every other week virtually !

The fewer clubs, plus the longer distances to away games, certainly underlines the reasons for the passionate rivalry in their derby games. The Geordies’ annual trip to Sunderland was probably the only away game that they would expect to get home before last orders.

Hugh Johns seemed to love Stoke.
When Stoke scored the 3rd v Leeds in Cloughie's first game for them, his commentary went something like 'We wanted that 3rd goal...and we got it!' (see the youtube vid)
Can't imagine commentary like that today!

John's used to refer to players by their nickname. Chippy Brady. Dixie Deehan. Often when a goal was scored he'd say 'There it is'. Brian Moore used to say 'Aaaaand it's in there'. David Coleman's 1-0 is the famousest

The power of nostalgia. During his time commentating on the Midlands people thought he was an absolute knobhead. Now he's loved. This is true from what I remember, which is odd because he was very warm towards Stoke. Seemed to love Greenhoff, Ritchie and Hudson But doesn't this tell us more about football fans than Hugh Johns? Never satisfied really and prone to OTT criticism. Loads of things that most of us moan about now will be looked back at more sympathetically I'm sure. Listening back I really like his commentary though, I'm not sure that is simply nostalgia, but more that he was full of character, quite descriptive and articulate at times. (cliches aside!) but yes, never write off nostalgia!

If NJ got a player's name wrong or Sohail mentioned his ht soup there's a few pages on it.

I kept seeing Paul Whitehouse watching that... "Enduring image - jumpers for goalposts" etc... great memories though, especially being in the crowd with my dad (RIP) when Greenhoff scored that one and we were top of the league
