The last 25 of them with Gary Lineker in the chair.
I like the show but I've not seen it since we got relegated. It serves as too painful a reminder that we are no longer dining at the top table.

David Attenborough commissioned match of the day when he was head of bbc2.
Great programme. A national institution. And despite saturation live matches it remains an important part of sport broadcasting.
I know it gets criticised but some people just hate everything.

Attenborough is a proper genius of broadcasting. He's so much more famous for his nature documentaries now, which often means his time as BBC Two Controller doesn't necessarily get the attention and credit it should. It's not hyperbole to say he revolutionised television in this country, and his tastes and instincts for what would make for good TV are much more diverse (and not always as highbrow) as his very middle-class academic background would suggest. He commissioned Monty Python, for example, and it was his idea to broadcast snooker at the advent of colour television. I can't help but wonder if the BBC would be in a better state today if he had become director-general in the 70s. A proper national treasure.

Monday night there's a programme on bbc about it. Half an hour. That's rather pathetic.

Lineker put me off Match of the day eventually, even when we did well, praise was through gritted teeth or not at all. My late nan despised Lineker, because he left his wife and kids for some young bit of fluff, she was always a good judge of character.

Isn't he also sort of responsible for tennis balls being yellow as well? Also to do with colour telly

I don't watch it anymore.
Mainly because of Lineker.

Sky being able to instantly post highlights might’ve hurt match of the day. I reckon I’ve watched it less than a handful of times since relegation. Although I definitely would watch often again if we got promoted again. (and hadn’t been tonked that day!)
I used to have a box set, MOTD in the 60s/70s/80s and that was fantastic!
At the risk of bringing politics onto the main board though I strongly suspect the days of the BBC as a powerful institution are now severely numbered. On the one hand it would be a terrible shame as much of the programming (stuff like planet earth/the blue planet, some of the greatest sitcoms of all time etc) are things that truly make you proud to be British.
On the other hand there are more and more people refusing to pay their licenses (often politically motivated) and many who are dreaming of dancing in the ashes of the corporation.
How it plays out exactly is hard to say, but I’m fairly confident in predicting that the bbc is going to have to adapt or die in the relatively near future.

The root of all glory hunting. When kids saw Liverpool and Man Utd on their screens every week (which they were - so much for serving a national market) on MOTD that’s where they started to gravitate to.

The only reason I don’t watch it anymore is that I’m fed up with the PL. it’s a victim of the over saturation of TV football. Though I have never subscribed to Sky. Some great memories though. I still watch it when they do the FA Cup and I like BBCs coverage of FA Cup early rounds.

Ok I am of that certain age, and yes so much glorious stuff to choose from MOTD in the 70s/80s but if you ever need cheering up & want something that doesnt include Stoke City, then this hits the spot every time

the wife hates Lineker and she is a good judge of men after all she married me, got to admit i also don't watch it cos of that overpaid wanker it was much better when he got suspended and the rest of the pundits walked too and we just got match highlights without the contrived bullshit where they just talk about how the big clubs are good, when stoke beat the big boys it was because they were bad that day not because we played well

when stoke beat the big boys it was because they were bad that day not because we played well I think this is an exaggeration. I can remember being luxuriated with praise during the stokelona era. That being said, the sofa pundits on MOTD were always extremely basic.

Lineker's an excellent presenter.
Stoke often got praise when it was due (under Pulis and Hughes), so I'm not sure where the hate comes from there. Maybe fans of every club think Lineker talks them down unless it's Leicester...

Never realised it was still a pretty new thing when I used to watch it on a black and white portable tv in a weekend caravan. Starsky and Hutch followed by MotD was the highlight of the tv week. Can't remember whether it was only broadcast in black and white then or whether that was just because it was a black and white tv.

When did MOTD start covering all the top flight matches?
I think they only covered 2 matches in the 70's and 80's which very rarely included us!
After which we were 23 years out of the top flight before TP took us to the Prem.
Guess I'm saying they don't have much archive Stoke City footage.

They started covering all matches when they got rights to show Premier League Highlights starting in 1992. The innovation was ITV's who used to show all first division goals during their live games between 1988-1992.

That's it really, any sniff of what is perceived as 'woke' or the 'left' and that is that really, enemies of the state!.....though might pretend otherwise. It's all a bit childish. Its also very British to hate our own (as well as others!!!)
