Papa smurfs turned up... to be fair he's Belgian. My immediate thought too. But I think he symbolised Krishna.

I have a theory that we reached our zenith as a country and maybe even the planet at the 2012 opening ceremony which is still one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. Nearly everything has been utter shit since.

The catwalk and fashion thing got criticised by the Swedish commentators, since this is supposed to be the Olympics of re-cycling - and fashion isn't the first you think about then, they said.

Turning over to watch repeats of Border Force on sky If I recall when we hosted the Olympics the opening ceremony was dire, with McCartney being embarrassingly bad. It's good to take the piss though, and countries don't have the budgets they used to for these kind of events. In the main they lose money from them.

I wasn’t dire at all mate far from it infact The London opening ceremony was the host nation's story. From Wikipedia: "The principal sections of the artistic display represented Britain's Industrial Revolution, National Health Service, literary heritage, popular music and culture, and were noted for their vibrant storytelling and use of music. Two shorter sections drew particular comment, involving a filmed cameo appearance of the Queen with James Bond as her escort, and a live performance by the London Symphony Orchestra joined by comedian Rowan Atkinson. These were widely ascribed to Britain's sense of humour. The ceremony featured children and young people in most of its segments, reflecting the 'inspire a generation' aspiration of London's original bid for the Games." What story are France telling here?

Re-cycling is the theme, according to the commentators here.
