Back in the day Brazilian nogger fans were (probably some old boys still are) sniffy about Pele because he didn't measure up to Garrincha.
A thing that I read about him once that really stuck in my mind was that on occasion he would inadvertently run the ball over the sideline, and he'd just carry on dribbling as if still trying to take his man on. Almost as if he was blissfully unaware, or just didn't care, that the ball had run dead and the game had stopped. Just a magic street kid constrained by the boundaries of a football pitch...

All I saw was bloody awful, flat-footed defending. He looked ahead of his time with regards to core strength and acceleration.
It’s why I hate “greatest of all time” discussions. Put Messi on clogged pitches in massive boots and watch him struggle to move. He would eventually be a standout player but he wouldn’t do all the crap he does now. Garrincha was undoubtedly one of the better players of his generation and that’s where the comparisons should always stop in my opinion. If he grew up today, he’d likely be excellent because of his desire to be excellent. However, we’d be watching a completely different highlight reel.
