Jay Z was made top of the bill because he is incredibly popular and Glastonbury has got a long tradition of taking risks, although in the last half dozen years the top of the bill has become incredibly safe. In the time the music has got safer, the crowds have got even bigger and now a more mainstream crowd don't necessarily want to experience music that tests their own tastes or boundaries. And for dragging the top end of the bill in a direction other than white men with guitars for once, I applaud Michael Eavis. Don't forget three years ago Kylie Minogue was due to headline. Hi-NRG pop music is hardly Oasis fan territory either is it?
Seveteen years ago, I saw De La Soul at Reading Festival and they were brilliant. And they're quite possibly most anti-gun anti-bling band in the world.
Oasis are all about the bling but they've got Union Jack guitars and Parkas so that's alright. Salt of the earth rock and roll my arse.

Dont really want to get into a debate here
but
I thought hip hop was shit until I really started to listen to it
NOW I LOVE IT BIG STYLE
Jay Z is not one of my favourite artists, but how can you class Lennon and McCartney etc etc as the worlds best songwriters?
Tupac and Jay Z have sold more albums than anyone ever in the music game
And I think Eminem is third?
Just an opinion

Personally I dont like R+B, Rap, Hip Hop, Garage or whatever label you want to slap on it - but I dont discard it as being shit, just because I dont like it - BUT in my opinion, there should not be a rapper headlining Glastonbury.
I encourage new types of music being performed anywhere, and agree that there may well be a place for rap at festivals, but for it to be a headline act, whoever it is, and however many albums they've sold, just aint right.
Oh and what a stupid fucking idea to cover Wonderwall - stick to what your good at you pillock

What's wrong with a rapper headlining Glastonbury? I honestly don't get it.

Is there a gig or fesival that consists mainly of Rap and R+B?
Like a gangster equivalent of Galstonbury?

he was very clever about it, mixed in some ACDC into the backing music etc, very clever opening, and commanded the crowd well, thought he put on a great set, one of the many great surprises of the weekend. Was unconvinced before but now think it was a brave move by Eavis that paid off.

What's wrong with a rapper headlining Glastonbury? I honestly don't get it. skip - I think it's safe to say me and thee have "different musical preferences", but I am 100% in agreement with you. From the moment the whole hoo-har started about Jay-Z playing Glastonbury I thought "WTF?! - I thought Glastonbury* was all about the ethos of just enjoying whatever was on, doing a few pints/joints whatever, and being generally excellent to each other"*. What summed it up was watching Sky News this morning and some bloke stomping away from the crowd on Saturday as Jay Z was on, saying "That's rubbish that is!..." . Congratulations pal I thought - you just admitted you're a conservative middle-class fogey on national telly - pipe and slippers and a pint of real ale in the pub next year then? Rap isn't my cup of tea most of the time either, but at least I can say that my preferred genre of music (Metal) has embraced acts like Jay-Z and rap as a whole - and arguably gave it the kick up the (combat) pants it needed. Maybe Glastonbury has become too big for its (welly) boots? Is it starting to become a dinosaur - like some of its audience obviously are. Discuss. (25 Marks). * I may have been naive - Glastonbury's not really my thing - as an event or in terms of the music. Mind you I'd have liked to have seen Muse when they headlined.

I was with you all the way until you dropped a bollock with Muse p.s. Anthrax versus Public Enemy is one of the greatest collaborations ever, and I've seen it live. Nearly wet my pants.

I was with you all the way until you dropped a bollock with Muse - Somehow I knew you'd say that . Ah - "Bring the Noize" Anthrax don't get the credit they deserve sometimes for that. They did their own self-penned rap as well before that. Novelty then = full-time careers now for Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit et al.

Jay Z had as much right as any other musician to be there!
Glastonbury is about alternative music, nit British and only british music.
Considering how much crap he was given once he was signed to play I think he did quite well!
And a great opening song in my opinion as well!
