Not sure when this was first aired but just watched episode 3/4 of this Premier League documentary that features how the players had to adjust to their newfound fame and fortune & how some faired a lot better than others. The likes of Beckham, Jamie Redknapp & David James were flourishing with modelling careers, when some were at the opposite end of the scale.
One of these players was Keith Gillespie who got embroiled in losing thousands due to betting on matches he was featuring in amongst other's!
One such match he placed bets on that I hadnt realised until just watching this programme, was our 3rd Rnd League Cup match v Newcastle United at the Victoria Ground.
For this match Gillespie had made the following bets via the telephone prior to the match.
£500 Beardsley 1st scorer £500 Beardlsey 1st scorer SC 0-2 NU £500 Beardsley 1st scorer SC 1-2 NU £500 Beardsley 1st scorer SC 0-3 NU £500 Beardsley 1st scorer SC 1-3 NU
So £2.5k on bets for this match alone which back then was a fair wedge of money despite him being on 5k a week.
£52k he expected to pocket if the match had remained at 0-3 or ended 1-3, as Beardsley was the 1st goalscorer, he was actually the scorer of their 2nd as well that night!
He said when NUFC made it 0-3 during the 2nd half he was desperate for Newcastle not to score anymore goals but couldn't get round the players to encourage them to settle with what they'd got. He said he tried to keep the ball in the Newcastle half & making back passes to stop them attacking!
When Newcastle went 0-4 up Gillespie had lost out on a £52k pay day and had lost £2.5k on this match alone.
The footage highlights of this match shows the Newcastle players and fans jubilantly celebrating their 0-4 lead & subsequent victory whilst Gillespie looks angry & disconsolate!
Doubt anyone remembers back to this match & Gillespies reaction when he realised he'd lost his bet & trudged back to the half way line on his tod instead of celebrating with his team mates, but if they did this was the reason why! Or his negative play once they'd gone 0-3 up!
So what a cheating git Gillespie was, never liked him as a player but sounds like he was a liability off the pitch as well as on it, drinking issues aside!
Totally get that gambling is an addiction in some cases & an easier one to hide than other addictions, but to be betting on his own team amd matches he was influencing on the pitch is just on another level.
Well worth a watch if can find it on BBC FOUR again..
Despite being gutted that night after a hammering home defeat against a big Premier League club, knowing that Gillespie lost a windfall in the process does take a bit of the disappointment off it, even after all these years!
One thing I do remember that night is Newcastle bringing a massive following down with them & there being loads of trouble & skirmishes everywhere around the ground & in Stoke Town Centre!
Seem to recall a Newcastle Mini Bus being tipped on its side by Stoke Fans, sure someone will remember and be able to recount if and where this happened.

I remember watching the minibus getting overturned, and amidst all the celebrations I remember a disconsolate Keith Gillespie looking on in the background. I later discovered that earlier that day he had put 5 grand on under 0.5 minibuses being overturned that day.
