As you will probably be aware, the calling of the General Election means the Football Governance Bill which was before Parliament, and would introduce a new independent football regulator, was lost. However, as it had all-party support, we hope that whoever wins the election, it will be re-introduced early in the new Parliament. To that end, supporters groups up and down the country, including the Stoke City Supporters Club, have co-signed a letter from the FSA letter and Dame Tracey Crouch, who chaired the fan-led review into the game, calling on the party leaders to include it in their manifesto, and ensure that it is reintroduced as soon as possible in the new Parliamentary session. Labour would consider 'transfer levy' for clubs purchasing football playersThe shadow culture, media and sports secretary, Thangam Debbonaire was asked by journalists if she would consider the move while she was visiting Bristol Rovers football club. "I'm going to look at everything again that was in Tracey Crouch's fan-led review. It's important that we go back to first principles, just make sure there's not something that's been missed that is needed in order to ensure the financial sustainability of the entire pyramid," Ms Debbonaire replied. Pushed to confirm its "back on the table" she repeated: "I'm obviously going to look at absolutely everything that was in Tracey's review, I think that would be foolish not to do that."
Ms Debbonaire said she "saluted" Ms Crouch who suggested the levy for sales between premier leagues or for when players are purchased from foreign clubs. "She did a lot of really, really good work. She got cross-party, universal support for what she did and I think fans really appreciated it. Of course I'm going to go back to that and see what else there might be." Thoughts Malcolm?

Yeah, £100 million for Grealish obviously isn’t enough. It clearly should have been £110 million so that clubs who have done nothing for the player can benefit from his sale. The alternatives are: 1 Leave it to the leagues. Pŕoblem is the Premier League is independent of the EFL and will stitch up the EFL and keep the money swilling around to thhhemselves. Also as the Man City case is proving they are pretty toothless when it comes to dealing with the big players. 2 Leave it to the free market to decide. The result will be what happens in every regulation free market- the big players will drive the small players out of business by either driving them into bankruptcy or buying them out. These were pretty much what the fan led report into football financing concluded and the answer put forward was a government commissioned independent regulator. Do you have any better ideas? |

Football only has big players because it also has smaller players. The wealth of clubs is the amount of clubs. Fewer is poorer and probably less money involved |

The first half is a misunderstanding. The three major parties have all committed to a Football Governance Bill which would set up an independent regulator. The Gvt would not be involved in running football. |

This is encouraging. Whilst we welcomed the Football Governance Bill, there were some things missing from Tracey’s recommendations. The main priority will be to get it in the Kings Speech. Manifestos are an essential first step but don’t get legislation on to the statute book. |

Lisa Nandy is going to be the new minister for culture and sport, so hopefully she’ll look to bring the Bill back onto the table. Don’t know what her sporting interests are but she was born in Manchester and is MP for Wigan, so hopefully she has an interest in football as most of her constituents will be sports fanatics. Only worry is that if she’s a Man City fan then that could influence the rules - here’s hoping she’s more Wigan or Stockport!

She was heavily involved twice with efforts to ensure Wigan Athletic survived so has a pretty good knowledge of the issues. |
